PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings to all BCGS Members and Friends:

Finally, it's the time for enjoying the summer weather, and making plans for road trips to visit archives, cemeteries and courthouses in the endless search for our ancestors.  Perhaps one of your summer projects is completing our Society's Cemetery Assessment Project form for your favorite cemetery - if so, we appreciate it tremendously!

Our June speaker, Beth Levitt, provided valuable information about NARA, and the meeting was well attended.  We are enjoying meeting in the larger space, Stone Hall, on the second floor of the David Library Conference Center.   Please join us for our August meeting, when BCGS and DAR member Marguerite Ann Bock Mogila will conduct a workshop on lineage societies.   There are hundreds of these societies - see if there is one for you!

On a personal note, I have been researching descendants of my ancestors who lived in western Pennsylvania.  FamilySearch has searchable, digital images of County marriages for all of PA, including Bucks, ranging from 1885 to 1950.  Not all years may be represented for all counties, but it's certainly a great resource.

I wish you all the best of success in your searching!

Warm Regards,

Christine Roberts

Our next meeting will be on Saturday, August 3, 2013.

Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archive Repositories

HSP's Hidden Collections Initiative is a project to make more accessible the collections of Pennsylvania's smaller historical societies and museums, by creating finding aids.  Phase I of the project began in 2011, which included repositories in Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties.  The initiative is now in Phase II, which will cover Bucks, Chester, and Delaware Counties.

The finding aids created as a result of the work on Phase I are available on the website of the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Library (PACSCL) at the URL below:
http://dla.library.upenn.edu/dla/pacscl/index.html

The finding aids for Phase II, including Bucks County, are expected to be available in 2014.

QUERY ABOUT WORLD WAR I PHOTO...

WWI Soldiers
This wonderful photograph of World War I soldiers in Doylestown came from the Hayman family which has identified their grandfather, George Thawley Hayman, as being in the bottom photo, 7th person from the right.

Does anyone know where I can go to get identifications of the soldiers? I believe I have located my own paternal grandfather, William John Jacobs, in the group.  I really want to preserve the names with the photograph!  If you have any information, please contact me:

DO A SIMPLE SEARCH...             Google logo

I received an email from a distant cousin in England, and it reminded me of how important it is to do a simple Google search for your ancestors and their siblings.  This simple tool can produce amazing results.  Here is my cousin's email:

"We Googled Mowitts last week as we knew some had ventured to Canada. Amazingly the professor of Earth Sciences from Ottawa has a website which explains how the older brothers of my gt gt grandmother sailed to New Brunswick from Berwick upon Tweed in 1837 and helped to set up the township of Harvey. Andrew Joseph Mowitt, a son, became a Presbyterian minister. On the website there is a letter documenting his visit to Ford, and the surrounding districts in Northumberland and just across the Scottish border, to visit ancestor's graves and cousins who'd remained here. I emailed the prof. who in turn sent my email to the head of History and to a contact in Coldstream whom he had visited in 2007 for 170th reunion of some of the ancestor's families. This man in Coldstream, Trevor, turns out to be a friend of my 'cousin' in Coldstream who we have been helping with the family tree.  Such a small world but it took an email to Canada to establish the contact. The Canadians and Trevor are amazed that we have 6 brothers and sisters of the settlers of whom they had no knowledge."

MacFamilyTree7  & MobileFamilyTree7

           by Mary Butash, BCGS Secretary

I am in the minority in genealogy circles in that I work on a Macbook Pro, not a PC. I originally did my genealogy work on a program called MacFamilyTree because it was the only program available for Macs when I purchased my first laptop. With the advent of my Ancestry.com membership, I was able to send my tree to Ancestry using a GEDCOM file. However, when Family Tree Maker for Mac was introduced, with its ability to "sync" with Ancestry automatically, I switched. Fast forward to now, and you find me disillusioned with FTM as syncing always seemed to create problems and I spend hours on the phone with tech support. I understand from my PC friends, this is not the case with FTM for PC's.

With the advent of the changes and updates to the new FamilySearch.org, Synium, the company that makes MacFamilyTree, notified me, changes have been made to the program that allows it to cooperate with FamilySearch, much in the same way that FTM purports to cooperate with Ancestry in their upgraded MacFamilyTree7. They also have a program that works with MacFamilyTree on your iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch called Mobile Family Tree7.

Hooray, I can leave behind my flawed FTM for Mac and use my new upgraded MacFamilyTree7 with the mobile on my iPhone. I can still send my tree via GEDCOM to Ancestry.

If you go to https://familysearch.org/products you can see listings for both programs on PC and MAC that Family Search calls "certified". This means that searches and access to FamilySearch.org family trees are easier and it allows you to print reports and charts using data from Family Search.org. It also allows you to Sync to and from FamilySearch.org and it matches, combines, and updates persons. It publishes and combines data into the new FamilySearch.org trees. It synchronizes data via iCloud and you can create webpages or back up your research with FamilySearch.org. It also allows you to exchange GEDCOM data or publish your family tree as a website on Synium's free service, macfamilytree.com.
