Public Art Project in Chinatown

Jasmine Lee, Youth Center Staff, is working with artist, Wen-ti Tsen, as the Assistant Artist  for Chinatown's latest community public art project: "Home Town: Re-presenting Boston's Chinatown as a Place of People - Then and Now." The project gracefully draws attention to the gentrification that has displaced much of the neighborhood over the past several years. Visit the Facebook Event Page for more information and upcoming dates to view the installations.

Youth Engage Elderly Community

Youth in BCNC's Summer Program partnered with Greater Boston Golden Age Center to complete their annual Community Service Project. The youth supported  senior community centers at Hong Lok House and Quincy Towers by designing and facilitating 1-hr sessions of activities with the elderly in the Chinese immigrant community. Activities included icebreakers, coloring and paper folding activities, performing a song, and facilitating karaoke. We are proud of our youth for giving back to the Chinatown community!
"Storytellers of the Future" Panel

In partnership with the Asian American Journalists Association New England Chapter, BCNC co-hosted "Storytellers of the Future" on Saturday, September 10. Panelists -- consisting of notables from NBC Boston/NECN, the Boston Globe, and WBZ Newsradio 1030 -- discussed the importance of staying authentic to one's own experiences and community, and how to advocate for others who do not have a voice.

Special thanks to our co-sponsoring partners! Asian Community Development Corporation, Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association of Lowell, Greater Malden Asian American Community Coalition, and Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts.

Giles Li is Keynote Speaker

BCNC Executive Director, Giles Li, served as the keynote speaker at John Hancock's MLK Summer Scholars Program end-of-summer celebration. The Program gives local nonprofits funding to create summer jobs for youth, where they learn important job skills and help the organization deliver on its mission. Giles encouraged the more than 600 youth in-attendance to choose a path that encourages them to share their values, as well as give back to the communities from which they hail.
Skill-Building with Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual LEAAP (Leading & Empowering Asian American Professionals) volunteers organized skill-building sessions on professional development and college readiness for BCNC's Youth Center.  Youth received one-on-one feedback from volunteers on their resumes, practiced job interview communication through mock interviews, and learned tips about college preparation, budgeting, and professionalism. Thank you LEAAP volunteers for supporting youth in our community!
