BCP Welcomes Jenn Blois Vitelkites to Board of Directors
Baltimore Curriculum Project would like to welcome Jennifer Blois Vitelkites to our Board of Directors.
Ms. Blois is an Executive Director at Ernst and Young. She works on corporate financial statement audits and assists her clients in interpreting and applying technical accounting guidance. She also serves on the Board of Live Baltimore, an outstanding BCP partner.
Since 2003, Business Volunteers has matched more than 700 professionals from their 60 business members with nonprofits nonprofit board through this program.

In June, Playworks Maryland was joined by an amazing group of volunteers from Volunteering Untapped to create a safe, engaging, and empowering play space for City Springs Elementary/Middle School and the surrounding community.
Volunteers transformed the empty blacktop area outside the City Springs Early Childhood Center into a dynamic play space for students to use during recess.
They painted a variety of games including four square, hopscotch, and relay race lanes.
The Baltimore Community ToolBank provided the tools necessary for the project.
When City Springs students return to school from their summer break, they will be excited to see their new play space full of brightly colored games.

LET'S GO Boys and Girls Provides STEM Training at Govans
In June, Govans teachers participated in a LET'S GO Ecology Academy training session, a five-hour, hands-on and minds-on STEM workshop provided by LET'S GO Boys and Girls.
These teachers will run the LET'S GO Ecology Academy for approximately 100 K-5 students participating in the Govans Summer Program in July.
The goal of LET'S GO Ecology Academy is to expose students to basic ecology concepts and establish their relevance to students' lives. The fun, yet challenging, hands-on ecology activities connect to students' local environment with frequent "field trips" to the schoolyard.
Each LET'S GO Ecology Academy lesson is built on the "5 E" model of science instruction, and includes an engagement event, or "hook," an opportunity for students to explore the concept and construct their own understanding, a teacher-led explanation of the concept designed to appeal to a wide range of learners, an opportunity for students to extend their understanding and apply what they've learned, and a culminating evaluation activity where students reflect on and record their findings. The program will culminate with a student showcase.

LET'S GO has been a BCP partner since October 2015, when they began implementing a comprehensive after-school STEM program as part of BCP's 21st Century Community Learning Center at Govans. The Community Learning Center is made possible by a generous grant from the Maryland State Department of Education.

"We have provided the curriculum, professional development for 8 teachers and administrators, materials, and most importantly on-site support.
The results to date have been amazing with the students having fun and learning while they immerse themselves in science, technology, engineering and math projects."

Weinberg Foundation Awards BCP $50K Grant for Wolfe Street Academy After School Program
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has awarded BCP a Maryland Small Grant Program grant of $50,000 to support the Wolfe Street Academy (WSA) After School Program.
This grant follows a two year Weinberg Foundation grant, which enabled WSA to serve additional and currently wait-listed students from low-income households during school years 14/15 and 15/16.
The Weinberg Foundation also recently awarded BCP a $20,000 grant to support WSA's summer program.
WSA provides a well-rounded, rich, accelerated program to all of its students in its day school, after school and summer school programs. Two hundred twenty students are enrolled in the school and currently 168 (84%) participate in the after-school, extended day program.
ExpandED Schools (a New York based non-profit) and the Family League of Baltimore have worked with WSA to create an integrated extended day program through which students continue to learn and engage in enrichment activities that complement the in-school learning experience.
The school day runs from 8:00am to 5:40pm and both the school day and after-school provide academic insruction and enrichment in a seamless and integrated manner. The extended day program provides three hours of additional academic instruction per week taught by certified teachers and a variety of enrichment programs including music, STEM and athletics.
Last year, the after-school program had 95% average daily attendance and WSA was nationally recognized by the Coalition for Community Schools and received a 2015 Community School Award for Excellence.
