Yargo Elementary Supports Veterans

On January 10th, the AMVets Chapter 12 of Winder presented recognition plaques to Yargo Elementary School's (YES) administrators, teachers, staff, and students for their "unwavering commitment and dedication to veterans, our local heroes". Each year, in celebration of Veteran's Day in November, Yargo Elementary hosts a military tribute to veterans. This year's program was included the presentation of colors by the Apalachee High School JROTC followed by a musical tribute of songs by YES students for the veterans in attendance.

Elizabeth Bennett, YES Music Teacher, produces and directs the patriotic program each year. Auxiliary President Sandy Bush said, "the veterans look forward to this every year, and especially the students singing to them." Ms. Bush went on to say, "Kindergarten, First and Second grade students learned "I Love America" and sang it to us this year!" In addition, the students made cards with handwritten notes for all the veterans.

In conjunction with the patriotic program this year, Yargo students and staff conducted a one day canned food drive for the local Veterans Homeless Shelter in Winder. Ms. Wall's kindergarten class collected the most cans with Kindergarten student Adalyn M. collecting and contributing 100 cans! Following the program the AM VETS Chapter 12 members delivered the 1200 donated items to the shelter along with YES's handmade student cards and notes.

Getting An "A" In Efficiency

The Barrow County School System had a wonderful end of the year gift from Georgia Power when they stopped by with a huge rebate check! This is another great example of how BCSS business & community partnerships further enhance and support our students, educators, and facilities.

The Barrow County School System received a $31,485.94 rebate check from Georgia Power for energy efficiency at the new Russell Middle School. Collectively, the rebates are for HVAC, LED lighting, and occupancy sensors among other technology that exceed standard build code requirements. "BCSS has always been a great steward of tax payer money when making long term decisions for school facilities. By maximizing the rebate program from Georgia Power, BCSS builds a super-efficient building and gets money back as well," said Nathan Bartlett, Key Account Manager for Georgia Power.
