Horticulturists Nursery, Horticulturists and Full Time Gardener, 



Horticulturist Nursery
 
Permanent Full Time

Located at our Botanic Gardens, this position maintains the nursery's diverse indoor and outdoor plant collections and is a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a real passion for plants.
 
You will perform plant propagation and nursery maintenance to ensure sustainable production of high quality nursery stock and display plants for our gardens and collections.  This will include researching and developing propagation techniques, planning and scheduling, and stock control.
 
You have post-trade qualifications in production nursery and/or horticulture, with demonstrated experience in production nursery techniques including propagation, scheduling and all elements of nursery maintenance.  This is complimented by your knowledge of pest and disease control and skills in conservatory/glasshouse maintenance.  You have good organisational skills and the ability to plan ahead. Your positive and open communication skills enable you to liaise professionally with internal and external customers to ensure demands and needs are met. Experience in a wholesale nursery environment will be highly regarded.
 
A Working with Children Check must be obtained before commencing in this position.

Horticulturists

Our Geelong Botanic Gardens is looking for qualified horticulturists to join their professional and enthusiastic team.
 
You will maintain a wide range of plants growing in both heritage and contemporary landscapes, plus contribute to the development of plant collections and themed displays.  You will also  maintain accurate records and labelling systems,  and share your knowledge and passion for plants with our many visitors.
 
You have post-trade qualifications in horticulture, with demonstrated experience in a large public garden and/or the operations of an associated organisation.  You have excellent knowledge of a diverse range of botanic assets and are highly skilled at plant identification and curation.  You are known for leading by example and role modelling your values, and are an encouraging and supportive team member. You enjoy sharing your fascination with the natural world and are comfortable speaking to visitors and groups.
 
A Working with Children Check must be obtained before commencing in this position.

Qualified Gardener

This position works in our stunning 165 year old Botanic Gardens, carrying out a number of gardening tasks to help make sure the landscape is presented at its best.
 
Your tasks will include garden bed maintenance, mowing, spraying, nursery maintenance, maintenance of displays and planting. You will also liaise with community groups and members of the public, and work in a safe manner at all times.
 
You have a relevant horticultural trade certificate and experience in the horticultural maintenance of a public garden.  You can apply your knowledge of horticultural principles, plants, tools, and equipment to respond to a range of practical problems.  You are a respectful and supportive team member who contributes new ideas on ways to work, and who can interact courteously and professionally with the public.
 
A Working with Children Check must be obtained before commencing in this position. A successful candidate will be appointed to the position 'Certificated Gardener'.

BGAN Z Scholarship and Awards now available

  BGANZ are delighted to announce three Awards for BGANZ Members commencing in 2017. BGANZ Professional Scholarship Award and BGANZ Young Member Award will commence October 2017.
 
1. BGANZ Professional Scholarship Award. (Value $2,000)
 
Objective:
To contribute to the ongoing training and development of BGANZ Members through overseas research or work experience with like organisations which will bring a benefit to individual and BGANZ.

The BGANZ Scholarship could be used for a range of professional development opportunities, including but not restricted to travel to study, travel to botanic gardens or associated horticultural institutions. It could be to undertake field trips and collection trips, or even to attend a relevant conference or seminar or to attend a specific training course. These opportunities may be in any country in the world, including Australia and New Zealand.


Closing Date for Applications: 31 July 2017. Successful Candidate to be announced at BGANZ 2017 Congress, Adelaide, October 2017. 

2.  BGANZ Young Member Award. (Value $500)
 
Objective:
To foster and support the ongoing training and development of younger BGANZ Members through the provision of a dedicated scholarship/award
 
Scholarship Details:
One BGANZ Young Membership Scholarship to the value of up to $500 will be offered every second year, commencing October 2017. The scholarship is open to all BGANZ Members under 30 and the successful applicant will be announced at BGANZ biennial Congress.
