BGCM Teens Enjoy Pizza with a Professional

The Design House presents for the first “Pizza with a Professional” Series

Pizza with a Professional is The Boys & Girls Club teens’ opportunity to hear from professionals in different fields of interest to them. These interactions with professionals help teens gain a better understanding of what it takes to achieve their professional goals. For the first Pizza with a Professional series, teens enjoyed a presentation by Devon Smittkamp and John Zertuche from the Design House; a full service creative consulting agency located in McAllen. TX. Devon and John talked about their experience with graphic design and media production while teens enjoyed some yummy pizza. Teens got to ask questions about Devon and John’s education, adversities, projects and professional experiences. The next Pizza with a Professional will take place on February 23, 2017.

Junior Youth of the Year

Greetings all, my name is Jose A. Alvarez and I am representing the Boys & Girls Club of McAllen-Brand Center. When I think of happiness, I think of a beautiful loving family. My family consists of my mom, little sister and I which I think makes us a beautiful loving family. We love and care about each other and quite often they smother me with love.  I’m a good student and my best subject is math. Math comes easy to me especially word problems. Because I like math, I might study something that requires math like engineering.  When I grow up I would like to be an engineer or maybe be a lawyer that works with the less fortunate. Outside of school, I like sports. I like them all but I think I’m better at basketball.  I’m pretty good at making two point baskets and sometimes 3 pointers. I have learned many things at the Club and the one thing that stands out the most is that finishing school is very important. Club staff has also taught me that nothing gets done alone so we must work as a team and to never give up. Being at the Club is fun. I like to play in the gym and make things in Arts & Crafts. The staff is helpful and is available to teach us things. I would tell all kids that they should come to the Club to have some fun with caring people.
