August 2018 - Phase 2E, 2C, 2D, & 3A Volume 7 | August 10, 2018
Brownsburg High School's renovation and expansion project is expected to be completed in June of 2020. This message goes to families who have children in Brownsburg Schools in grades 8-12 in 2018-2019, to BCSC staff, and to anyone who has subscribed through our website. These emails are sent quarterly to provide information specific to each phase of the project, focusing on areas that impact students and their daily routines at Brownsburg High School, or summer visitors to BHS.

Since the project started in late 2016, well over half of the classrooms have been renovated and are in use at Brownsburg High School. With Phase 2C this summer, twenty-three additional classrooms are now being used in the 2018-19 school year. While other spaces are still being renovated, returning students are taking classes in sixty-seven newly renovated classrooms .

Overview of Phases 1B, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E & 3A
WHAT: Construction activities have continued behind temporary walls in the main part of the high school building and work on the northeast side of the building will be completed in the next few weeks.

  • Phase 1B, 2A, 2B - Carpet has been installed and finishings have been installed to complete these phases
  • Phase 2C - 22 additional classroom renovations have been completed and the rooms are now in use for the 18-19 school year. The BHS Clinic is complete (pictured) and the most of the Team Office space is now open. Some small parts of the new Team Offices will remain closed until large beams for Phase 3A can be installed. There is signage in the building to help students find their Team 2020, 2021, or 2022 Office. (Newly renovated classroom pictured at the top of the newsletter and below.)
  • Phase 2D - The main entry - #1 - at BHS has reopened. The entry is slightly reconfigured for the addition of the temporary A hallway that takes student traffic from the renovated spaces to the Art, Performing Arts, Athletic, and Senior Academy spaces. **More details about an additional temporary hallway below**
  • Phase 2E – The PE/Health space has been in use since since mid-April. The performing arts classroom space is also complete and the Brownsburg Band and Guard used this space for summer rehearsals. Study hall classes are also meeting in this room during open class periods this year.
  • Phase 3A - (see timeline below) This phase will continue through the end of 2019. Since Spring Break, the BHS Auditorium has been closed. It will reopen in January 2020. School events have already been held in alternate locations like East and West Middle School and Connection Pointe Christian Church. As Phase 3A moves from the Auditorium into the original 1971 portion of the building, travel between the main building and the Senior Academy, athletic, and performing arts facilities will be significantly impacted. **More details about an additional temporary hallway below**

WHY: The core of the Brownsburg High School building has been relatively unchanged since it opened in 1971. With 13 additions over the last 46 years, the infrastructure of the building is in dire need of an upgrade. These upgrades will accommodate technology needs for teachers and students that weren't in place in 1971 and maintain a comfortable learning environment with updates to the aging HVAC system.

Impacted Areas
Building Access
  • Entry #1 has reopened. The student pick up / drop off line has car riders entering at entry #12 and #14. Bus riders enter through entry #3. There should be no student drop off on Odell. Map is posted on the BHS website and also below.

Classrooms & Relocation
  • With the addition of 22 renovated classrooms, many teachers are in new locations and students have settled into a routine and have found their new classrooms. The auditorium remains closed and students traveling to/from from the renovated spaces to the Art, Performing Arts, Athletic, and Senior Academy spaces will utilize the temporary A hallway.
NEW TEMPORARY CORRIDOR UNDER CONSTRUCTION
The temporary hallway constructed for Phase 3A has created congestion in two specific spots along that heavily traveled route. Through collaboration with the staff, contractors, and students, an additional temporary hallway is under construction and expected to be open for use next week.
The construction in the core of the building (shaded portion of picture) is the main focus of Phase 3A. For students to travel between the south end and north end of the building, they currently enter/exit through entry #1 or entry #16 and use this temporary hallway. (2-way traffic in red and green)
This additional temporary hallway will also be covered and secure. It will only be in use during passing periods. Northbound traffic will exit out near the 1st floor locker bays and room A1-316 (red arrows) into this new hallway. A police officer or school principal will be posted outside entry #1 during every passing period to ensure that students moving from one hallway to the other are safe, and that no outside visitors enter the building without first entering the main office. Southbound traffic will continue on the present route back in to entry #1, past the office and into the A hallway. The contractors expect to have the new temporary corridor up and running next week.
