Letter From Mr. Bildsten
Dear Parents and Guardians:

As we begin to wind down the school year, the Baraboo High School calendar is packed full of events and happenings to keep on our radar. Spring is always a busy and exciting time of year in our schools!  Below, I want to highlight and inform you about state assessments, awards ceremonies, graduation, and final exams.  Much more follows in the rest of the spring newsletter:

ACT Aspire and Forward Testing:
As partners in your child's education, it is important to ensure they are prepared for each step along their educational journey. One way to determine student preparedness is through assessment:
  • Forward Exam--All 3rd-8th grade students as well as 10th grade students who attend public schools in the State of Wisconsin will participate in this testing.  Tenth graders will be assessed in the content area of social studies.  At BHS, we administered the Forward exam to 10th graders on Tuesday, April 11th and Thursday, April 13th during extended homeroom periods.
  • ACT Aspire--All 9th and 10th graders in the State of Wisconsin will once again be taking the Early High School Assessment called Aspire. This test is aligned with the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks.  At BHS, Freshmen and sophomores will be taking the ACT Aspire (English, math, reading, science and writing) assessments during extended homeroom periods between the dates of April 24-28.

You can help to prepare your student(s) to do their best on those testing days by ensuring they are well rested and have a good breakfast.

Spring Awards Assemblies:
We're planning two spring Awards Assemblies this year.  Our Academic Awards Assembly will take place on Thursday, April 20th at 9:10 a.m. and serves to honor the efforts and accomplishments of students in the classroom. These academic awards include certificates, letters, medallions, and plaques and are based on points that students earn by making the honor roll and/or high honor roll.  Students on the high honor roll receive two points per semester and those on the honor roll receive one point.  Points accumulate throughout a student's academic career at BHS.  Parents and guardians of students receiving academic awards have been notified ahead of time and invited to attend this assembly if it fits into their schedules. On Thursday, May 25th  at 9:10 a.m. we will conduct another assembly to primarily honor students who have been involved in a variety of clubs and activities ranging from Student Council to Key Club.

Graduation:
Graduation will take place on Friday, June 2nd at 8:00 p.m.  The last day for seniors is Wednesday, May 31st.  Seniors are expected to be in attendance at the Graduation Practice which takes place on June 2nd from 7:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Final Exams:
We will not be administering final exams using a traditional exam schedule this year; instead, teachers will be administering final exams during their regularly scheduled class time. Our block schedule with 85 minute class periods lends itself nicely to this format.  This format also allows flexibility to teachers who may want to give their final exams earlier than what the traditional exam schedule allows resulting in more timely feedback to students and opportunities for other follow up, including the administering of make-up exams.

As the school year unfolds, thank you for encouraging your student and helping to ensure your student is having a successful finish to the school year. Our staff is always available to answer your questions and provide assistance.  Be sure to reach out to us if you have any concerns or questions and/or ideas for how we can make your student's experience at BHS a positive one. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Glenn Bildsten
Baraboo High School Principal

Student Services

ALICE Active Shooter Training
The Baraboo School District takes its responsibility to protect the physical and psychological well-being of our students and staff very seriously.

As such, we will be implementing a strategy known as the ALICE protocol.  ALICE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate and is endorsed by federal, state and local law enforcement officials.

Before we initiate conversations with students, we would like to share the ALICE protocol with parents. This opportunity facilitated by local safety officials will take place on April 11th at 6:00 PM in the Jack Young Middle School Auditorium.

Practice at each level in our district will be developmentally appropriate for the intended age and audience:
  • Elementary Schools - Local safety and school officials will read a book to students and engage the students in conversation on how to secure their classrooms and how to evacuate.  In some instances, students may walk with teachers to a designated evacuation site close to school.

  • Jack Young Middle School and Baraboo High School - Students will be instructed on the full ALICE protocol which includes enhanced barricades and counter/evacuation measures.
If you do not want your child to participate in ALICE instruction and practice, please contact your child's principal.  Furthermore, we encourage you to contact the principal at your child's school with any questions or concerns.  Thank you for your collaboration in working to keep all of our students safe while at school.

Help support BHS students travel to Europe to learn about Swiss folk culture, the Renaissance, and Ancient Rome!

This tour will include visits to the places students learn about in school. That's a given. But it's so much more than that!

Students will be immersed in new cultures - surrounded by the people, the language, the food, the way of life - that will create inspirational moments that can't be taught in the classroom.

Our student group will have expert local guides that will lead them on sightseeing tours, provide detailed views of history, art, architecture and more.
