Hefty Fee Increase Part of Uptown Facilities
Plan Update
By Matt Adams
As the city wrestles with a downzone as part of the Uptown Community Plan Update, the facilities financing plan crafted to accompany the planning document calls for a 40% increase in its Development Impact Fee. The City wants to increase the fee to $12,060 per unit, a 40% increase from the current $8,755 per unit. Park needs account for over 80% of the DIF as the city looks to provide up to 155 acres of parkland.  Ironically, Balboa Park boarders the Uptown community yet is not included in the city's park calculation because the city argues it is a community park and therefore does not qualify. Balboa Park is one of the largest metropolitan parks in the nation and equals New York's Central Park. The BIA questions the need for a substantial fee increase in light of the 2,000 unit downzone that is part of the Uptown Community plan update. The Facilities Financing Plan goes before the city's Infrastructure Committee on September 27th.
No Rolling Blackouts for this Volunteer
By Michael Harris
Here at the BIA, we depend on our member volunteers to help make things happen.  Rock Star volunteers that always say "I'm here to help" are our unsung heroes.  So today, we're going to recognize a volunteer that never says no when asked to help.  In fact, she often helps without even being asked.   Deborah Newell from  SDG&E is our Rock Star volunteer of the week.
Deborah has been a member of the BIA for a very long time.  I'd mention the number of years, but that's not very gentlemanly of me.  So, let's just say she's seen the ups and the downs of our industry over the years.  But, unlike those who have said "been there, done that" as it relates to volunteering, she continues to give back.
