Window-Hanging Worthy Moments
By Borre Winckel, President & CEO
Remember Peter Finch in the movie Network? In it, he encouraged his viewers to hang out of their windows and yell, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!" In my latest installment of window-hanging-worthy-moments, I cover the Los Angeles City Council. Later this year, these city fathers (& mothers) will consider yet another sweeping development fee to pay for affordable housing. The action would worsen our housing picture statewide as many jurisdictions will follow the bad example set by California's largest city.
Everyone loses, especially the housing poor. It's the very definition of insanity.

Uptown Heads to Planning Commission
By Matt Adams
The Uptown Community Plan update finally makes its way to the San Diego Planning Commission for evaluation on Thursday. The long range planning strategy has been 10-years in the making and is not without controversy. Despite the City's goal to increase densities in existing communities as part of its Climate Action Plan, it actually calls for a 2,000 unit downzone and making its 'interim' building height limit permanent which will result in further unit reduction. Ironically, the proposed downzone does not sit well with some members of the local planning group who sought a more robust reduction in the 4,000 unit range. The BIA and other housing advocates oppose any downzone and will testify when the Commission gavels in at 9:00 am Thursday.

BIA Members Concrete Contractors Interstate and Sudberry Properties team up in Mission Valley
Much of the easily developed land in San Diego has already been developed and turned into homes, mixed use properties and commercial space. What's left is land that is difficult to build on, which usually leads to higher construction prices and therefore costlier housing/renting availability. Luckily, builders and developers can turn to local San Diego companies for innovative new solutions that make it easier to develop the land while keeping costs low. One example is Concrete Contractors Interstate (CCI) who developed their proprietary iCON Wall Solution. iCON is one-of-a-kind way of building a retaining wall using tilt-up panels, delivering increased flexibility and reducing overall construction time by as much as 30-40% while maintaining the structural integrity of the wall.
Sudberry Properties is utilizing iCON in their Mission Valley development to save time, manpower and money. We know BIA members love to work with each other and it's a testament to how our members are leading the industry.

San Diego Studios Going for a Premium
By Philip Molinar - San Diego Union Tribune
For seven years, Steve Harrison has lived in a studio in Hillcrest where he pays $850 a month, almost unheard of in San Diego.
Harrison, a marketing manager, said by staying in a 315-square-foot apartment he has been able to save money. "I have a great deal here and I like the low cost and location," he said Monday. "Plus, it is less to clean."
