When Fish Are Jumpin' and Housing Goes Dry!
|
By Borre Winckel, President & CEO
Mr. Gershwin, I'm sorry for abusing your Summertime lyrics to make a point.
I reprint an article below, which the AP ran yesterday. Understand that the issue the AP covers is not really about saving the fish, but all about altering the California landscape to mimic its pre-Columbian state. You'll read how a lot of water we count on today will not travel South.
Less water from the North, means further complications for providing much needed housing. The needs of fish come before the needs of our population. If that means total misery for us peeps, fine, because that is entirely by design! Since the environmentalists also fight the next generation of desalination plants - needed to make us independent of river flows & snow pack - it should be pretty obvious that our future will see water wars, the likes of which even our California ancestors never waged.
Our access to water is at risk.

Community Plans Await Their Fate
|
By Matt Adams
The San Diego City Council will consider two community plan updates when it convenes on Tuesday. The Northpark and Golden Hill plans have reached a final decision after years of deliberation and analysis. It's part of the city's plan to expedite community plan updates which are essential to address San Diego's future growth needs and climate action plan goals. As has been the case, the main issues involved density, traffic and historic preservation.
The final Council vote will set the stage for the Uptown community plan to come forward in November.

City to reverse density cuts in Uptown neighborhoods, including Hillcrest
|
Amid tense negotiations with residents, environmentalists and builders, the city of San Diego has agreed to roll back a proposal to reduce the housing density allowed in the Uptown community - which encompasses Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Mission Hills and parts of University Heights.
The city has been working on an update of the Uptown community plan for about eight years, a process recently complicated by its aggressive blueprint to combat climate change. The climate document calls for hundreds of thousands of commuters in urban areas to abandon their cars during the next two decades in favor of biking, walking or taking public transit, a feat many experts have said is achievable only with denser, more walkable neighborhoods.
At the council's Smart Growth and Land Use Committee meeting Wednesday, elected officials voiced support for the idea of maintaining the current number of housing units allowed under Uptown's zoning rules based on concerns about the environment and affordable housing.
