Lead Change in Supervisors Race
By Matt Adams
All eyes are on the race for San Diego Board of Supervisor as Encinitas Mayor, Kristin Gaspar has taken the lead against incumbent Dave Roberts. The first term supervisor has watched his 2,200 vote lead in the 3rd District evaporate as the Registrar of Voters began counting the 620,000 mail and provision ballots that remained following Election Day. The switch occurred late last week when Gaspar cut into Roberts' lead by 500 votes on Thursday and then took a 15 vote lead on Friday. As of Monday night, Gaspar's lead has grown to 368 votes. The race is far from over, however, with 164,000 countywide votes still to be counted.
Advocacy in Action: Win for our Industry!
By Matt Adams
The Park Villas project was approved at the November 16th Oceanside City Council meeting by a 3-2 vote. Brain Rupp, Senior Vice President of Development for Shopoff Realty Investments Inc. thanked the Project Green Light volunteers for their generous support and, "for sacrificing your time in what ended up being a very long evening in council chambers." Volunteers were invited to celebrate the success after the hearing.
Chairman's & Legislative Awards Presented
at BIA Annual Dinner
BIA Chairman David Stearn presented awards to two individuals who have worked tirelessly on behalf of the entire bui ldi ng indu stry. BIA's own Vice President of Government Affairs, Matt Adams, was the recipient of the Chairman's award, and Marc Harris of Performance Drywall the SDBIA Legislative award. Chairman Stearn gave the following accolades at the Annual Dinner while presenting the awards.
Chairman's Award Presentation -  Each year the Chairman has the privilege to present this award to the individual he or she feels has made the most positive impact to the Association over the past year.
This year, I am thrilled to give the Chairman's award to a very special person who has year after year made a consistent and lasting positive impact on this Association and dare I say on our local industry as a whole.
Record Showing of Elected Officials at 2016 Annual Dinner & Political Leaders Reception
Last Thursday over 400 of our members assembled for the Annual Dinner 2017 Economic Forecast & Political Leaders Reception. With a showing of over 40 elected officials and city members this was our largest gathering of political officials to date. We appreciate all of them for showing their support and taking time out of their busy schedules to attend.  Eugenio Aleman, Senior Economist with Wells Fargo Securities, gave an intriguing view into the economy post-election and what that will mean for our industry. W e would like to acknowledge a special thank you to Joniene Swick with Joniene Was Here Photography for the photography at the event. Check it out here!
Lastly, we heard from a few members that they were not pleased with the comedic act prior to the economic forecast. While we always strive to provide a wide range of event ingredients and have used comedians with great success (including this very same comedian), we acknowledge that we may have let some of you down and for that we offer a sincere apology. In the future, while we will take extra precautions to avoid such mishaps, please rest assured that we shall continue to put on first rate events for the benefit of our industry. If you have any lingering concerns, please contact our CEO directly.

About that California housing crisis: 'It's break-glass time'
By the San Diego Union Tribune Editorial Board
Earlier this month, the California Association of Realtors held a "summit" in Los Angeles to address the question of "Housing Affordability and California's Future."
A central question debated at the meeting: Should California take drastic, unprecedented steps to boost housing supply and stop constant increases in renting and home ownership costs?
The short answer, this editorial board firmly believes, is yes.  Read More
