Uptown Community Plan Heads to
Council Committee
By Matt Adams
The San Diego Smart Growth and Land Use Committee will take up the Uptown Community Plan when it convenes on Wednesday afternoon. The city proposal would result in a major downzone in an area considered by most to be a prime region to upzone as part of the City's Climate Action Plan strategy. The Planning Commission weighed in on the plan earlier this month and nixed any notion of a downzone. They voted to keep the existing land use map but use new development regulations and eliminate the interim height limit ordinance.  Their unanimous vote followed a lengthy hearing that brought out transit advocates opposed the 2,000 unit reduction with some planning group members arguing against more density.   The Smart Growth Committee hearing should be no different with both sides prepping for what will be a spirited debate. A final vote before the full city council is expected in November.
BIAPAC Voter Guide: Let the Voting Begin
By Matt Adams
The BIA Political Action Committee has announced its official endorsements for the November General Election. The  BIAPAC Voter Guide comes as voters looking to get a head start begin to cast ballots at the Registrar of Voters office or by mail. Thousands of advanced voting ballots will hit mail boxes this week in what has become a major trend for citizens in San Diego and elsewhere. More than 60% of ballots casts are done before Election Day and this election will be no different. The Voter Guide is available to BIA members at our Kearny Mesa offices or though the website.

BIA Staff Heats Up at the Chili Cook Off
By Michael Harris
There are certain events in our industry that become tradition over the years.  These events are so memorable that they bring people back year after year. An example would be our popular BIA Builders & Brewers. However, there is one tradition that happens at this time every year that surpasses them all. It's the  Hunsaker and Associates San Diego  Chili Cook Off.
A time honored tradition,  Dave Hammar  and his team continue to bring out those closet Food Network chefs and their tasty chili, plenty of libations, and great friendly networking.

The Unintended Consequences of Law
How did an entire state price itself out of the market for entry-level home buyers?

When Pat Burns began his construction career in California in 1970, houses sprang forth from the ground in as little as two months, and it didn't cost that much to get them started. Today, he says, cycle times have doubled, and he estimates that fees, labor regulations, and more stringent building-code requirements add roughly $47,000 to a typical 1,400-square-foot home-and that's if everything goes right.
