Housing Crisis Takes Center Stage at San Diego City Council Swearing in Ceremnoy
|
By Matt Adams
Housing was foremost on the minds of new and returning members of the San Diego City Council who were sworn into office on Monday. Speech after speech of incoming and outgoing city representatives stressed the need to do something about housing affordability.
Led by Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the members of the 71st City Council acknowledged the culprit to affordability is a housing shortage. Council newcomers, Barbara Bry (District 1), Chris Ward (District 3), and Georgette Gomez, (District 9) echoed similar themes that skyrocketing housing and rental costs were a serious problem affecting San Diegans young and old. Returning District 7 Councilmember, Scott Sherman painted a sober picture on government's role in the housing crisis stating that nearly 50% of the cost of new home construction is due to the regulatory process. All members said the city must focus on regulatory reforms to expedite housing production in 2017.

Cole Named Council President
|
By Matt Adams
San Diego Councilmember, Myrtle Cole was chosen as the new Council President during the inaugural meeting of the 71st city council. The 4th District representative prevailed over Councilmember David Alvarez following an hour of public testimony in front of a packed city hall chamber. Echoing sentiments voiced at the earlier swearing in ceremony, both council president hopefuls cited the need to address San Diego's housing crisis in the coming year as well as job creation and community investment. Cole was elected on a 6 to 3 vote, with councilmembers Chris Ward, Georgette Gomez and David Alvarez dissenting. She assumes the post held for two years by former councilmember Sherri Lightner.

2017: What's Next in Housing
|
By Philip Molinar, San Diego Union Tribune
Expect increased rent prices in San Diego County next year and many of the same hurdles to get new homes built.
That's at least some of the consensus coming out of two real estate forecast conferences in San Diego this week attended by builders, landlords and investors.
There was cautious optimism about President-elect
Donald Trump, anticipation of changes for office space demand and a general displeasure about the failed effort to get Lilac Hills built at the annual economic forecast gatherings of the local Institute of Real Estate Management in La Jolla on Friday and the University of San Diego's business school on Thursday.
