Tri-Lox's Trifecta
The state of the environment has been getting a lot of attention these days, but too often we throw away items that still have value. While we may not be able to envision a purpose for these things, craftsmen, like the founders of Tri-Lox, are taking old materials salvaged from a range of places like Build It Green!NYC, to the very streets of New York, and turning them into both beautiful and practical pieces.
Located in Greenpoint, Tri-Lox was developed through the collaboration of three buddies from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Alexander Bender, Tim Knight, and Ellis Isenberg had been childhood friends, and later found themselves reunited again in New York City. Together, the three partners opened their own design + build studio, specializing in reuse of reclaimed lumber and other materials. Since 2009, these partners and friends have worked to create economical and eco-friendly pieces that range from functional furniture to works of art. Tri-Lox creates many of its own pieces but is also available to craft custom designs for individual customer needs. Since its inception, the small business has expanded to more commercial projects, providing design consultations for local businesses and working on fabrication projects for art galleries and museums such as The Children's Museum of the Arts NY. Their most recent project consisted of running a 20 student, 3-day workshop with NYC's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) at their Greenpoint studio. This workshop taught students to identify different salvaged materials, understand where they came from, how they were used in the past, and ways they could be used in the future.
