Spellbound Is Expanding!
Or, There and Back Again
After a rough few years that included leaving West Asheville to move downtown, then moving one street over and downsizing, Spellbound has survived the The Great Recession and is ready to grow again. With your help, we are about to expand back to original size--and then some!
More details will be forthcoming soon, but for now just know that we are busy looking for property to lease for a full-size main location with more space for events and better parking. The search is concentrated for now in West Asheville--right back where we started from!
We're not abandoning downtown, however. We want to give you the best of both worlds. We are planning to keep our current location inside the fabulous ZaPow illustration gallery as a satellite location, possibly with more of a focus on teens.
Soon, we will reach out to you, our faithful customers, with some opinion polls to get your feedback on this and other questions, such as what event programming you'd like to see offered.
As part of our financing for the expansion, Spellbound will launch
an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds. If you haven't heard of it, IndieGoGo is somewhat like Kickstarter. It is a crowd funding platform which helps us appeal to potential supporters both locally and nationally. Everyone who contributes (from $5 on up) to help us expand will receive special perks as thanks--the bigger the contributions, the bigger the perks!
When we launch the campaign in early March, we'll provide lots more detail about the perks, our vision of the new space and our increased inventory, programming, and more. The money raised will allow us to do the construction "build-out" that will be necessary in the new space before we can move in, as well as allowing us to add more fixtures to hold a much bigger, deeper inventory selection and provide the programming that our customers have been asking for--more of the big book-themed events that brought many of you to us in the first place, as well as adding birthday parties, summer day camps, parents' night out, and more.
Thank you for all your years of support, and I hope you will consider helping us write the next chapter in the Spellbound story.
Workshop: Intro to Publishing
with Megan Shepherd
Local author Megan Shepherd, whose debut YA novel The Madman's Daughter has just been published by Harper Collins (and has been optioned for a movie), is presenting a publishing workshop at Spellbound on Sunday March 3rd at 5:30pm.
"Intro to the Publishing Process" will include Megan's advice about writing queries, as well as finding an agent, self publishing vs traditional publishing, and other topics of importance to writers just launching their careers. The presentation will last about 30 minutes, with another 30 minutes set aside for Q&A afterward.
Seeing as Megan's very first book garnered a three-book deal with a major publisher plus a movie deal, it's a good bet that she has some helpful insights! You don't have to be targeting the YA market to benefit from her knowledge and experience.
Because The Madman's Daughter
is our March selection for the ROYAL Book Club (Megan will be joining us at the meeting--details below), it is available at Spellbound for 20% off retail price now through March 3rd. The workshop is free with your purchase of The Madman's Daughter
OR $10 at the door.
Retail Price: $17.99
Spellbound Price: $14.39 (through March 3rd)
To gain admission to the workshop, please be prepared to either show your Spellbound receipt for this book, or buy a copy at the door, or pay a $10 admission fee at the door.

We're very happy to announce that in February and in March, the authors of our book selections will be at our meetings to take your questions and talk about their upcoming projects.
Don't miss this wonderful opportunity for a small group discussion with the author. We're sure they would each be happy to sign your books, as well.
ROYAL is Spellbound's monthly book club for adult Readers of Young Adult Literature. We meet the first Sunday of each month at 4pm. Anyone 18+ is welcome, no rsvp necessary. Book club selections are always 20% off until the day of the meeting.

The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd
Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London--working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.
Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.
Retail price: $17.99
Spellbound price: $14.39 (through March 3)
