Wayne K. Curry - HISTORY MAKER

Wayne K. Curry, former Prince George's County Executive and EDC Board Chair, died July 2. Curry is credited with transforming the image of Prince George's County and has been labeled a history maker by the community, business partners, his family and his friends.

In 1994, Curry made history when he became the first African American to serve in the County's highest elected office. He served two consecutive terms from 1994 to 2002. The unprecedented change he brought to Prince George's County included a 150 percent increase in home sales and a significant expansion of business development. During his tenure, Curry argued for upscale shopping centers like Bowie Town Center, National Harbor and other large developments. He is credited with luring the Washington Redskins to a new stadium, FedEx Field, in Landover, MD, and for convincing former NBA star Earvin "Magic" Johnson to invest in many businesses in the county, including a 12-screen movie complex at the Boulevard at the Capital Centre.

"As a friend and colleague, Wayne will be sorely missed. He was a game changer in the development of Prince George's County. His work and vision are a testament to the pride he took in making this County and its profile known locally and nationally. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many friends who loved him so much," said EDC President/CEO Gwen McCall.

Until death, Wayne Curry continued to help drive the economic engine of Prince George's County, joining efforts to bring a casino to National Harbor.
