Historic BMES Annual Meeting features elite speakers, cutting-edge research and competitive awards



The 2016 BMES Annual Meeting wrapped up on October 8 in Minneapolis, capping one of the most program-packed, highly-attended meetings in the Society's history. 

Highlights included the Robert A. Pritzker Distinguished Lecture delivered by Dr. Nicholas Peppas, and a keynote by Medtronic Chairman and CEO Omar Ishrak.

Antonios G. Mikos Named 2017 Shu Chien Achievement Award Recipient  

BMES Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering (CMBE) Special Interest Group (SIG) is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2017 BMES CMBE Shu Chien Achievement Award, Antonios G. Mikos, PhD.    

The BMES CMBE Shu Chien Achievement Award was established in 2014 through an endowment funded by members' donations. The award honors Professor Shu Chien, MD, PhD, past President of the BMES. Dr. Chien is well recognized as one of the foremost pioneers and educators in biomedical engineering world-wide.

His vision and leadership to integrate biomedical engineering with cardiovascular physiology and molecular & cell biology have greatly impacted the field of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering.

Pitt BMES Chapter hosts 'Dinner with Professors'   

The University of Pittsburgh Undergraduate BMES Chapter hosted our semi-annual Dinner with Professors event on Oct 19th in Pittsburgh, PA. 

Six professors, including the chair of the department Dr. Sanjeev Shroff, and 40 students attended.

Students were matched with professors and joined them for a candid discussion about their research, personal interests, and other topics over dinner. Another event is planned for the spring. 
 
ABME Article On Airbag Helmets For Biking Highlighted In Press

A recent article published in Annals of Biomedical Engineering about airbag helmets for biking was highlighted in several media outlets. 

The article, Modeling and Optimization of Airbag Helmets for Preventing Head Injuries in Bicycling, was published in September. 

The article was featured in NeuroscienceNews.com and The Atlantic Citylab. 

According to the ABME abstract, bicycling is the leading cause of sports-related traumatic brain injury. Most of the current bike helmets are made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam and ultimately designed to prevent blunt trauma, e.g., skull fracture.

Call For 2017 CMBE Young Innovator Nominations, Due November 4 

Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering, an official journal of the Biomedical Engineering Society, is currently accepting self-nominations for the 2017 CMBE Young Innovators Special Issue. 

The 2017 Young Innovators issue will be co-edited by Michael King, Alyssa Panitch, and Richard Waugh.  Accepted authors will be invited to present their work in a special two-part platform session at the 2017 BMES Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

BMES Members Named To FASEB Executive Committee   
 
Two Biomedical Engineering Society Members have begun their terms as officers in The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). 

Scott I. Simon is FASEB's Vice President for Science Policy, and David M. Rocke is serving as Treasurer. Both Simon and Rocke are Professors of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Davis.
