Boulder Nordic Sport News
Happy New Year from your friends at BNS! The ski season is officially underway with or without Mother Nature's cooperation. After a great US Nationals with the Chisholm Ski Club putting on a great show with very limited snow, we're fired up to get out to the races. See this week's Chambo Chat for a race service recap from US Nationals.

Looking forward, we're also excited to have Randy Gibbs joining our service team for the American Birkiebeiner and City of Lakes Loppet this year. Gibbs will be helping out during a break from his regular job, waxing skis on the World Cup Circuit. BNS will also be offering a special World Cup Waxing Symposium and Gold Medal Wax Service to take advantage of having Randy around. See article below.

We know that it's been tough skiing out there with thin snow almost everywhere (other than Alaska). Almost everyone is suffering from scratched up skis and we want to do something about it. We are offering a "Sticks and Stones" grinding promotion from now until February 3. Click here for more.

And speaking of great deals: we're happy to announce a discount on Madshus Nanosonic elite skate packages. Packages include Nanosonic skate skis, Madshus 100UHM poles, bindings, a stone grind of your choice and a hotbox ski preparation. We'll even throw in a pair of elite skating boots of your choice at 15% off. Click here or call 877.BNS.SKIS for information.

As the New Year rolls around once again, we'd also like to say thank you to all of our customers who have made BNS what it is. Our company has come a long way from its humble beginnings in a bike shop, and its thanks to the great people that we work with every day that we have come so far. Have a great ski season and we will look forward to seeing you out on the trails.

--The BNS Team

P.S. Don't forget to keep an eye on Facebook for contest announcements. We've got prizes from Holmenkol and SkiGo coming up...and an entry for the 2012 American Birkebeiner!

World Cup ServiceTech Randy Gibbs Joins BNS for the City of Lakes                    Loppet and American BirkebeinerBirkie

American Birkebeiner Logo

During a break in World Cup action this winter, Service Technician Randy Gibbs will join forces with Boulder Nordic Sport (BNS) for the City of Lakes Loppet and American Birkebeiner. Gibbs will add his extensive experience to the BNS Mobile Race Service Crew for their Race Waxing Services at both events. To take advantage Randy's seven years of unique experience waxing skis for top athletes on the World Cup, BNS will host a World Cup Waxing Symposium and offer a special Gold Medal waxing service for the American Birkebeiner.

Gibbs may be joined by fellow World Cup waxer Oleg Ragilo if schedules allow. Gibbs and Ragilo have waxed skis that have won 3 Olympic Medals, 7 World Championships Medals, 23 World Cup Medals and over 50 World Cup podiums.

City of Lakes Loppet Logo The World Cup Waxing Symposium will be held in Minneapolis on Tuesday, February  21.  This clinic will provide an intimate setting to master every step that goes into creating the best possible skis in the world. Topics will include ski and grind selection, glide wax and fluoro application as well as kick zone preparation from sanding all the way up to wax selection and application. More than just a lecture, participants will get hands-on experience under the expert supervision of Gibbs and the BNS Tech Team. All attendees will receive a special email on the day before the Birkie with race-specific waxing instructions and be entered to win a drawing for a signed World Cup bib, a Holmenkol structure tool, Ski Go wax and a free BNS World Cup-level Birkie wax service. Cost for this event is $200 by January 31 or $250 until registration closes on February 20. Limit: 40 participants. Click HERE to register for the symposium.

In addition to BNS's highly-successful Mobile Race Waxing Services, BNS and Gibbs are launching a new Gold Medal Race Waxing Service that will provide the same level of ski service that Randy provides elite athletes on the World Cup circuit. Gibbs will evaluate each Gold Medal skier's race fleet and then help participants select two pairs of race skis by testing on the Birkie trail Thursday or Friday before the race. Gibbs will then apply the full World Cup Wax and structure treatment to two pairs of skis for race day. Only eight spaces are available for this Gold Medal service, so sign up today! Cost for the Gold Medal Race service is $350, available at the American Birkebeiner only. Click HERE to sign up or call 877.BNS.SKIS.

Race Service

BNS Mobile will be at the American Birkebeiner Feb 22-25 with a full service team providing wax sales and brand-neutral race waxing service. BNS is fielding the most qualified service team at the Birkie this year, with members drawing their experience as techs at the Olympics, World Championships, World Cup, World Masters Championships, US National Championships, NCAA Championships and of course, many American Birkebeiners. Treat yourself to a full race wax application by our professional service team so you can relax and focus on your race knowing that your skis are in good hands. Make the most of your hard training hours by having some of the fastest skis out on the course.

BNS Race Service includes base prep, low-fluoro and high-fluoro paraffins and pure-fluoro topcoats. For classic skis, the BNS Tech Team will provide an ironed-in binder as a foundation for final kick wax application to be applied by the racer on race morning. Skis will be ready for pickup the evening of Friday, February 25. Cost for the BNS Race Wax Service is $75 per pair before February 17 and $85 until the 11am cut off time on February 24. Click HERE to register and for further information.

Brand-Neutral Wax Recommendations and Testing

The BNS Mobile Service Team will be testing wax extensively in the days running up to and the morning of the American Birkebeiner. BNS is committed to keeping all wax reports brand-neutral--if it's running fast, you'll know about it. Wax reports will be available on bouldernordic.com, facebook.com/bouldernordic, at the BNS Mobile trailer and the BNS booth at the Birkie expo.

David Chamberlain, Chambo Chat
Service Report from US Nationals in Rumford

US Nationals concluded on Sunday after a week of racing in Rumford, ME. Boulder Nordic Sport had a three person crew on site for waxing service: Roger Knight, Shane McDowell, and David Chamberlain. It was a very busy week for us with a course of entirely man-made snow and variable conditions throughout the week. The hard work resulted in wax combinations that made the most of the conditions. Not only did our wax combinations feel great to us on our test skis, they also had success on the results sheet.

Team Homegrown members Noah Hoffman, Tad Elliott, and Sylvan Ellefson used skis that we waxed for glide. Between the three, they had two national titles and a bronze medal throughout the week.

For glide waxes we had success with the Ski*Go line all week. In our paraffin tests using our matched test fleets, Ski*Go HF Orange/Green Premix was the best in most tests throughout the week. For three out of the four races, we used this wax as our under layer paraffin. Although Ski*Go HF Orange/Green Premix is designed for fresh snow, our thought was that it had enough green in the wax to provide the perfect hardness for the harsh man-made snow.

Ski Go CM 10
Ski*Go CM10

For top-coats, we had great luck with Ski*Go CM10.  As a new product this year, CM10  was a relative unknown for us going into the week. After it won nearly every top-coat test we conducted, either alone or in combination with a liquid, CM10 became the week's revelation. We used CM10 in every wax combination we used in our race wax jobs. One of the surprises about this wax is its incredibly broad range. We had good luck it testing in warm temperatures and also on the coldest days of the week. A wax combination that we quickly dubbed "the Rumford" was a layer of CM10 applied underneath an application of Ski*Go C55/99 Liquid. We used this wax combination in three out of the four races, either alone or applied over an application of Ski*Go C44/7 powder. We had good feedback from coaches and athletes who used this combination.

The conditions for the classic races were difficult for kick waxing. Finding the right combination of kick and glide was a challenge. After testing hardwax, klister-covered and straight klister skis on race days; we found the best combination of kick and glide with klister-covered skis using the Guru line of waxes. For our race wax we used a thin layer of Guru Extreme 39 Hard covered with 2-3 layers of Guru Extreme Hallgeir hard wax. For the distance race, we applied a tacky binder of Rode Chola underneath this wax combination for durability.

Our success with these lines of waxes had more to do with snow type than temperature. Man-made snow is a unique snow type, abrasive, dirty and often variable from one section of the course to another. Taking this in to account, it was no surprise that we had good luck with just a few brands of wax throughout the week. As the temperature fluctuated from day to day, we saw very little fluctuation in our testing, even within the brands themselves. Ski*Go CM10 was a perfect example of this-running well on our first day of testing when the temperature was 40 degrees F and on the last day of testing when the temperatures were well below freezing.
