Hello San Antonio BOMA!
We have just attended the 2013 BOMA International Winter Business Meeting. I must say, you can all rest well knowing that our national organization is working very hard for you and our commercial real estate industry.
I attended committee meetings on Building Codes and Standards, Local Volunteer Leadership, Preparedness, Experience Exchange Report, Southwest Region and Government Affairs. The business of BOMA is handled at this event. We didn't get to sit in an education session and be entertained by professional educators, we sat in sometimes very large (or quite lengthy) committee meetings during which relevant and very important concerns were brought up for discussion and recommended action.
You will find some very dedicated individuals at these meetings, at one point during one of my meetings it was stated "These are the folks that drink the Kool-Aid, it's those other people you are talking about" and it was a member referencing why some members regularly volunteer and some never do. I say this not to be funny, but to make the point that BOMA is the very powerful and influential organization and that it is due to the large number of very passionate volunteers that attend these events and serve on these committees year round (the Kool-Aid drinkers). Without them, we would not be the BOMA we are today. We have several of those very folks here in San Antonio who work very hard and take on the unglamorous roles to keep our Industry strong.
I encourage you today, go find your Passion and make a Difference, "Drink the Kool-Aid" and become the energy that someone or some organization needs. For those that are passionate about BOMA, thank you ! |

Texas Advocacy Day Report
Over 70 BOMA members from Houston, Dallas/ Ft. Worth, Austin, Corpus Christi and San Antonio joined together to meet with over 120 congressmen from both the House of Representative and the Senate. Our goal was to brief them on legislative proposals arising during this year's session that will affect our industry.
The legislative landscape is changing. More and more proposals affecting building owners and asset managers - new taxes, fees and land-use restrictions - are going to the ballot.
Listed below are some of the proposals and BOMA's position:
- Texas BOMA supports PACE Legislation (HB 1094 by Keffer/SB 385 by Carona)
- Texas BOMA opposes mandatory sales price disclosure
- Texas BOMA opposes appraisal caps on real property
- Texas BOMA opposes legislation that would require owners to create a retainage trust fund
For more detailed information, please click here. Please contact me if you would like to join the Legislative Committee.
