Southwest Middle to host book launch for

award-winning author

New York Times bestselling author Kwame Alexander is launching his new book "Swing" at Southwest Middle’s media center on Oct. 2 at 3 p.m.

Last school year, Southwest Middle’s students voted Alexander’s "The Crossover" as their favorite book during a March Madness reading competition and also hosted a party to celebrate the release of the book’s prequel, "Rebound."

Through social media, the school's media specialist Carrie Friday and students have been able to communicate regularly with Alexander and are excited to welcome their favorite author to their campus.

Southwest Middle is located at 451 Eldron Blvd. SE, Palm Bay.

Titusville High athletes lead spirit events at elementary schools

Student athletes from Titusville High are boosting school spirit and building relationships with younger students from three elementary feeder schools.

The high school role models will visit Apollo, Coquina and Imperial Estates elementary schools in Titusville to welcome students to school with high-energy and uplifting music.

They plan to repeat the activity regularly with the next event scheduled for September 28 at 7:20 a.m.

United Way honors

Manatee Elementary

United Way and Brevard Public Schools are celebrating elementary aged children who stepped up to read over the summer as part of the summer learning loss awareness campaign. This past summer, 4,707 elementary school students read as part of a summer reading contest.

Manatee Elementary had the most student participation with 394 students completing the reading challenge. United Way is sponsoring an ice cream party to recognize their hard work.

The party will be on September 26 at 1:30 p.m. at Manatee Elementary. The school is located at 3425 Solerno Blvd., Viera.

The team from Manatee Elementary celebrated their victory by drenching one of their competition rivals in nacho cheese.

BPS hosts 13th annual parenting workshop

On October 6, a free “Parenting in Today’s World” workshop will take place at Brevard Public Schools’ headquarters. The presentation will address communication within the family, emotional development and wellness and healthy balance. Attendees will leave with hands on, proactive strategies that they can implement immediately and utilize with their children.

Teachers can earn in-service credit for attending the workshop and registering on ProGOE (Course: 11046, Section: 400934).
