How to Prepare Your Child  with Special Needs for the Back to School Transition

"There's a sale on school supplies," I told my then 11-year-old son. "Let's go. You can pick out all your own binders and folders."

"Mom, you are ruining summer," he wailed. "I don't want to think about school. I don't want to go to school. I hate school!"

This was not news to me. He struggled with ADHD and school demanded he be-and do-all the things that were so hard for him. They needed him to be organized, on-task, get work done and be nice about it.
Mental Health Screening Tools

Taking a screening test is one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition.
Did you know that...
  • About 1 in 5 American adults will have a mental health condition in any given year?
  • But only 41 percent of them will receive services?
  • About 10 percent of the American adult population will have a mood disorder, such as depression or bipolar?
  • And 18 percent have an anxiety disorder, including post-traumatic stress disorder?
Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety, are real, common and treatable. And recovery is possible. But not all of us think about our mental health enough. Continue reading here.

Current Information for HCBS

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) has scheduled a series of public forums to discuss integration of the state's home- and community-based Medicaid waiver programs.

The purpose of these meetings is to talk to Kansans who receive these services in an effort to understand and address their frustrations with the current individual waivers. This will be an opportunity for HCBS waiver consumers to let the agencies know how the waivers are working for them. The agencies are working on creating a new 1115 waiver that would integrate current waiver services, so that all services would be available to waiver participants regardless of the waiver for which they are eligible if they are determined to need these services to continue to live in their communities.

**While the state would like for individuals to register for these public meetings, registration is not required to attend.**

Registration, as well as dates, times, and locations can be located on the Current HCBS News Page.
Survey: Patient-Centered Care in Rural Areas

A research team from the University of Kansas is interested in learning more about patient-centered care in rural areas. The team has developed two surveys to better highlight the different perspectives of rural healthcare.

The first survey is for people who live in rural areas to determine what they want and prefer when they access healthcare.

The second survey is for healthcare professionals serving rural areas to better understand the various aspects of patient-centered care to the provision of health care in rural areas.
