30 Day Challenge?  Yeah, I did that! (And more...)

There's nothing easy about the 30 or 60 Day Challenge.  30 hot and sweaty 90 minute classes in 30 days is tough (we don't call it a challenge for nothing)!  At the end of it though, you have to admit it; it is worth it.

Just ask any of these yogis who recently finished their challenges!

Back to School
Newsletter | August 2011
Greetings!

There is no escaping it.  Everywhere we go banners declare that the time has come to go back to school.  Even though the heat of the summer has not yet broken, summer vacation has come to an end.  Whether in school or not, the summer months have a tendency to interrupt routine with visitors and vacations and summer time activities.  As August wanes and September approaches, the time comes to reset your schedule and get in the groove that will carry you through Fall.

For many of us, the last few months may have provided much more time to dedicate to yoga while for others it may have seemed impossible to find the opportunity to practice even once a week. Either way, make it a priority this August to recommit to your yoga practice.  Make time in your busy schedule of classes and after school activities (or taxi duties), to take care of yourself.

Back to School

This time of year "busy" tends to take on a whole new meaning.  School has started, summer vacation has come to an end....Remember that as you get busier, this yoga becomes even more important.  Here are a few ways that yoga will help you succeed this fall:
  • Stress Management.  This is a big one.  Ironically, as we get more stressed we tend to cut out activities that help us manage stress.  When we keep our stress levels in check, we are far more efficient at managing time and being productive.  Keep coming to yoga and you will find that you accomplish more in less time.
  • Be Bright Eyed.  I am no stranger to nodding off in class.  My guess is that you also know the feeling when your head gets heavy and starts falling forward and backward.  Yoga helps to regulate your sleep-wake cycles so that you can sleep better at night and be awake and aware during the day.
  • Focus, Concentrate.  How many times have you heard these words during yoga class?  We practice concentration during yoga and that skill helps us outside the yoga room to avoid distraction and focus on the task at hand.  If you are focused on your homework and projects they will get done faster and be of better quality.
  • Stay Fit.  The busier we get, the less attention we tend to pay to physical activity and eating well.  Don't fall into that trap - Bikram Yoga will not only keep you fit but will also increase your body awareness so that you crave healthier foods without having to think about it as much.
  • Patience Yogi.  Transitions and new schedules can truly try the patience, especially if you must coordinate with someone else, such as a spouse or your children.  Yoga helps us remain calm even when circumstances are less than ideal.  Having the ability to stop, breathe and then act rather than reacting will help you keep your calm and your perspective.
  • Time for You.  This is inherently important.  You must take care of you, no matter what.
It's Still Hot Outside!

Sun

Summer vacation may have come to and end, but the summer time heat is still going strong.  As Bikram Yogis we must be extra careful to stay hydrated.  Here is a recap of the hydration tips from the last three months:
  • As a baseline, you should be drinking at least half your body weight in ounces per day.  Factoring in the dry heat and yoga, you may have to drink your full body weight in ounces.
  • Be sure to replenish your electrolytes!  The best way to rehydrate is to drink water, but you also have to make sure you are replacing the salts you sweat out.  You can do this with supplements or drinks such as coconut water.
  • Avoid reverse osmosis water since it lacks the minerals that help your body absorb it.  If you have RO filters, consider replacing those minerals with rock salt.
  • Drink water throughout the day to avoid chugging water, which can give you that waterlogged tummy ache.
  • Eat foods that have a high water content.
  • If you are dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous or have a headache, you may be dehydrated.  If you have not hydrated well, please do not attend class because it will exacerbate the problem.  Rehydrate first, then take class.
Good Luck Roxie!

This month we must say farewell to Roxann Blanchard, aka "Roxie" aka "B".  She joined us at the front desk in November to help out with busy evening classes and has been a wonderful asset to our community ever since!  We will miss her smiling happy face but wish her the best of luck in San Jose, CA!

Good luck Roxie!  We'll miss you!

We have to drink a lot of water.  Sometimes it gets old and we need something with a little zing that also keeps us hydrated.  Try this simple mid-day pick me up!

Watermelon, Ginger and Lime Juice

Makes 1 serving:
2 Cups Watermelon, cubed and seeded
1 Tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
1/4 inch piece of ginger, grated
2-3 ice cubes

Toss everything into the blender and process until smooth.
Enjoy!

And of course, the monthly picture of a beautiful Bikram Yogi celebrating nature in the best way we know how!

Remember as you make the Back to School transition (even if you aren't actually going back to school) to make time in your schedule for yoga.  Recommit to your practice so that you can stay happy and healthy and productive this fall.  After all, the most important thing in your life is your life.  So take care of it!

Sincerely,
