Resist Empathize Act Discuss

Each month we're going to highlight a few books on a subject of particular relevance.

August: Healthcare
A Bitter Pill, by John Sloan, MD
What's worse than the failure of the health care system to adequately care for seniors? The fact that it's actually doing them harm. In A Bitter Pill, Dr. John Sloan investigates the reasons why the medical community is unable to provide lasting health to seniors, concluding that incorrect assumptions have led to the current health crisis among the elderly. In a remarkable argument, Sloan contends that medical measures based in prevention actually do seniors more harm than good, diminishing their current quality of life in the hopes of preventing future disease.

Other reads:

An American Sickness,  by Elisabeth Rosenthal
At a moment of drastic political upheaval, An American Sickness is a shocking investigation into our dysfunctional healthcare system - and offers practical solutions to its myriad problems. Breaking down this monolithic business into the individual industries-the hospitals, doctors, insurance companies, and drug manufacturers-that together constitute our healthcare system, Rosenthal exposes the recent evolution of American medicine as never before.

America's Bitter Pill,  by Steven Brill
America's Bitter Pill is Steven Brill's acclaimed book on how the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, was written, how it is being implemented, and, most important, how it is changing-and failing to change-the rampant abuses in the healthcare industry. It's a fly-on-the-wall account of the titanic fight to pass a 961-page law aimed at fixing America's largest, most dysfunctional industry.

The Healing of America, by T.R. Reid
Bringing to bear his talent for explaining complex issues in a clear, engaging way, New York Times bestselling author T. R. Reid visits industrialized democracies around the world--France, Britain, Germany, Japan, and beyond--to provide a revelatory tour of successful, affordable universal health care systems. Now updated with new statistics and a plain-English explanation of the 2010 health care reform bill, The Healing of America is required reading for all those hoping to understand the state of health care in our country, and around the world.

Upcoming Events
This month's Local Author and Small Press Book Fair will take place on August 5th from 11:00am-1:00pm.
Take a Bite out of Barbara J. Langner's New Mystery

Author Barbara J. Langner will be joining us to discuss her new book,  The Chocolate Murder , on  Sunday, August 20th at 3:00pm .

The chocolate covered body looks like the creation of a giant Easter bunny. Peering into the bakery window, Monica Walters sees a woman slathered with chocolate sprawled on the floor in front of the glass cases filled with pastries. Since Monica doesn't see oozing blood or fragments of brain tissue, she remains calm and calls the police.

This bizarre murder sparks a new,  moneymaking idea for the bakery's owner. He sells cakes topped with tiny dolls covered in chocolate frosting for potlucks, showers, and hostess gifts. Monica discovers the victim entertained male guests in the wee hours while she baked. The boss says sex never interfered with her professional duties. She never burned a cake. When Monica investigates the boyfriends, none has the earmarks of a murderous loony. Unless, of course, he's a good actor.
