"Rio" by the late Robert O. Torrence, III 1981

In honor of Black history month The Fredrick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Museum will be hosting an exhibition entitled Baltimore "MASTERS" Art of the Ancestors a salute to historical Baltimore
African-American visual artists who have joined the ancestors circle. Baltimore has a rich  legacy of visual artists.  Their contributions are
the very fabric  of Baltimore City. Many of these artists achieved national and international acclaim, yet often have mostly gone unrecognized within their own art community. Only a few local galleries have validated their contributions, and most local
institutions have yet to acknowledge their contributions.

This will be a rare gathering of visionary and dynamic creators who utilized art to heal, uplift, and empower.
Baltimore "MASTERS" Art  of the Ancestors will feature the visual
artists that represent the Baltimore African American art scene.
The exhibition is the first of its kind to recognize this legacy of artists, activists, and artrepreneurs that were the very fabric of the inner city. This landmark exhibition  includes the likes of the late
Thomas Stockett,
Larry O. Brown, Sr., William Joyner
Robert O. Torrence III, Tom Miller, Pontella Mason, Leroy "Miki" Jones, Elizabeth Talford Scott,
Cary Beth Cryor, Larry Stevens, Dr. Luke Shaw,
Chenal Alford II, Carl Clark and
Cornell Barnes.
