Banner Elk Winery hosts benefit
for "The Twilight Inn Foundation"

The Foundation has provided medical and supportive care for animals in need since 2000. The concept of the "Twilight Inn" was formed when homes were needed for older pets, including a miniature horse, when their guardians were not able to care for them any longer.

"We are in a fund raising phase to purchase an adjacent 5 acres. A green barn and cat house are in the planning stages. I would also like to clear an area to walk the dogs, calling it "Twilight Trails." Animals... Artfully! is a part of our group where local artists have donated art work, with an animal theme, to be sold with all the profits going towards the Twilight Inn." -Dr. Margaret A. Federhart, Founder of The Twilight Inn Foundation, Boone NC

Mountain States Mobile Health Unit to conduct cardiovascular

assessments for the community at Lees-McRae College on August 14

On Thursday, August 14 from 7am-4pm., the Mountain States Mobile Health Unit will be in Lees-McRae College's Hayes Parking Lot across from Hayes Auditorium.

By appointment only, the Mobile Health Unit will conduct cardiovascular assessments and the first 25 participants will receive a complimentary assessment, courtesy of a sponsorship by the Mountain Ambulance and Healthcare Foundation and the Mountain States Foundation. After the first 25 participants, each assessment will cost $89.

This event was coordinated as part of Lees-McRae's new May School of Nursing and Health Sciences community outreach initiative. Members of the community are welcome and encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. To schedule your assessment, please call 1-855-673-3376.

The five-part assessment includes Lipids Test (Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides); glucose test; biometrics test (height, weight, waist and blood pressure measurements); cardiovascular test including carotid artery scan (ultrasound evaluation of the carotid arteries that assesses for buildup of fatty plaque), aorta Scan (ultrasound assessment for the presence of aneurysm in the abdominal aorta) and ankle brachial index measurements (assesses peripheral artery disease, also known as plaque buildup in the legs); and a sleep disorder questionnaire to determine the risk of sleep apnea.

"The new May School of Nursing and Health Sciences is committed to engaging our healthcare partners and residents in pursuing prevention and wellness," said Dr. Laura Fero, director of nursing at Lees-McRae College. "It is our vision to have our leadership and students facilitate these relationships and provide needed healthcare screenings to High Country residents. Our goal is to continue outreach throughout the year and build a collaborative relationship with the May School."

According to The Mountain Star, the Mountain States Mobile Health Unit was formerly known as the HeartCoach. As of January 2014, the 40-foot-long RV expanded its range of services and was renamed to officially be the Mountain States Mobile Health Industry & Community Health Assessment Unit.

For more information about the May School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Lees-McRae College, please contact Dr. Laura Fero at ferol@lmc.edu.
