What is it, and why?
On March 1st we enter the season of Lent, a season that takes us to the heart of our faith. As we prepare to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, we need fewer distractions and more focus in our daily life and in our worship. As Saint Leo the Great said, speaking of this holy season, "What a Christian does at all times should be done now with greater care and devotion."
Our Sunday morning worship experience will mark the season in a variety of ways. Gone are the bright green vestments that characterize the season after the Epiphany; the clergy will wear the Lenten Array, bleached linen and oxblood. Our usual colorful flowers are replaced by lush yet simple greenery. The gilded Gospel book is set aside and so are the shiny vessels; we will use handmade pottery, which is what Jesus used on the night in which he was betrayed. Eucharistic Prayer C will invite us to reflect on our purpose for gathering at the altar, and as the prayers lead us to reflection, you will find more silence in our liturgies, an opportunity to unplug the noise from our ears and tune in to God.
We will also be learning two simplified settings of our service music. The "Sanctus" ("Holy, holy") and "Trisagion" ("Holy God, holy and mighty") are both taken from a mass setting entitled New Plainsong, written by Dr. David Hurd, former Professor of Church Music at General Theological Seminary. The music is similar in style to Gregorian chant and is sung in unison with minimal accompaniment.
In addition to the Sunday morning liturgies, there are opportunities for spiritual growth throughout the season, including a study day at Candler Seminary, a Contemplative Retreat Morning on March 18th at St. Anne's, and the Wednesday Night Lenten Series, focused on Luke 10. Whatever personal practice you choose for the season of Lent, you will find strength and support at St. Anne's, and accountability too. Together we can become more attentive and prayerful in this holy season "until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ." (Ephesians 4:13)

We are looking for people who are interested in making these deliveries on Sunday or Monday once a quarter. No flower arranging experience is necessary. Please join us for this ministry by contacting Patricia Daniel at pdmath@yahoo.com or Katherine Kinser at kpkinser@bellsouth.net.
