Gut Decision: Scientists Identify New Organ in Humans
Excerpt from LiveScience.com

By | January 3, 2017

A mighty membrane that twists and turns through the gut is starting the new year with a new classification:
Dr. J. Calvin Coffey has concluded that the mesentery, which is a membrane found in the gut, is its own organ. Credit: Alan Place
Scientists are proposing that the structure, called the mesentery, be upgraded to
an organ.

Scientists have known about the structure, which connects a person's small and large intestines to the abdominal wall and anchors them in place, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, until now, it was thought of as a number of distinct membranes by most scientists.

Case Studies:
(Submitted by Tommy Hedelund, PT, DO, CVTP)

CASE STUDY 1

Patient Symptoms:
16 year old girl with diffuse pain in her stomach and she suffers hugely from migraines. This has been going on for several years, and has no traumas in her history that could explain it.

Her doctor has not been able to help her and told her that she had irritable colon. He could treat the migraine with medication.

CASE STUDY 2

Patient Symptoms:
Male age 63 presents with neck pain and lumbar pain. He has been operated on for herniated disk at L5 in 2008 and he tells me that his recent MR scan is showing 3 herniated disks in his cervical spine and that the doctor is advising him to get an operation. The operation for the L5 hernia did not cure his lumbar pain.

Visceral Manipulation Study Groups and Practice Groups
null

Enjoy the Benefits...

Study Groups create wonderful opportunities to practice the skills you have already learned and further your understanding of your chosen modality by sharing experiences and asking questions of other like-minded practitioners.

Study Groups include hands-on practice, techniques review and time available to have your questions answered. Study Groups are led by Instructors, Teaching Assistants, or Certified Therapists.

Practice Groups are more informal, and allow for students to practice in order to prepare for further study.

To learn more about adult learning and why Study Groups are so important, please click here.

To locate a study group in your area, click here.

To become a Study Group Leader or Practice Group Organizer, please contact Kristen Bloom at kristen.bloom@iahe.com

How to Beat the Stress Epidemic
Mind/Body Strategies for
Enhancing Well-Being

by √Čric Marlien, DO, PT

Note from the author: This book is written for anyone who, in one way or another, feels their life is a succession of difficulties. These could be due to the ups and downs of daily life or they could be due to internal, psychological stress connected to their personal narratives.

It is my intention to show they become aware that reducing daily stress is an entirely personal process of shifting attitudes, and that it is up to us alone to exercise our freedom and creative power, in every aspect of our existence.
