Despite selling approximately 10% fewer horses, the overall gross increased 23%, the average increased 37% and the median increased 55% over 2017. The average of $10,950 was the highest for any Barretts January Sale since 2001. The median of $5,750 is the highest median at any Barretts January Sale. Nine horses sold for $40,000 or more compared to three in 2016 and this was most horses sold at this level since 2007.

Two-year-olds dominated this sale as six of the nine highest priced horses (as well as the top 4) were two-year-olds. The two-year-old average was $14,097 compared to $5,868 in 2016.
The 2018 Barretts January Sale was topped at $120,000 by Hip 164 , a strapping 2yo colt by top sire Quality Road from the family of top class sire Speightstown, sold by Adrian Gonzalez's Checkmate Thoroughbreds as agent and purchased by O. J. Jauregui, agent for Highland Yard LLC. This was the highest priced horse at the January Sale since 2008 when a broodmare brought the same price. The second highest priced horse, Hip 159 , a 2yo filly by the young California sire Empire Way who is a half sister to top 2017 California juvenile Smokem, sold by Lovacres Ranch for $80,000 which is the second highest priced horse in the the January sale since 2008 exceeded only by this year's sales topper.
The highest priced broodmare sold was Hip 81 (T ilde), a young gray stakes winning mare of $345,000 in foal to Kentucky based Creative Cause, who was sold by Andy Haven's Havens Bloodstock Agency as agent and purchased by Arizona-based H & E Ranch for $45,000.

This is the highest priced broodmare sold at the Barretts January Sale since 2015.
The highest priced yearling was attained Hip 26 for a racy Arizona-bred filly by Kentucky-based sire Street Boss, who is a half-sister to two California stakes horses.

She was bred and sold by by the Arizona-based H & E Ranch and purchased by Bob Feld, agent for Kentucky-based Machmer Hall. This was the highest priced January yearling since 2014.
