BATAVIA UNITED WAY MAY 2017 NEWSLETTER
DID YOU KNOW.......

While Batavia United Way funds 17 area non-profits, the following were the highest in demand based on our usage numbers:

#1 Senior Services Associates-
Case coordination and comprehensive care assessments for Senior Citizens
This agency is critical to helping Senior Citizens stay in their homes as long as possible in a safe and healthy manner. They provide resources for Seniors and Caregivers that you might not  otherwise know existed.

#2 Salvation Army Tri- Corps. - Emergency Relief Services This non-profit can help with utilities, rent and other emergencies when you are faced with an unforseen crisis.
They too have a great network of resources to tap in to when the unexpected happens.

#3 Tri City Family Services - Counseling Services

Anxiety, depression, family dynamics - help is available and insurance is not required.

In reviewing all of our agencies we found -

63% of people who utilized services and programs funded by BUW
in 2016 were women.

48% were Seniors age 61 and over.

26% of people served, when asked, confirmed they are at or
below the poverty level.

Batavia Apartments Welcomes new Resident Services Coordinator

Batavia United Way has supported and funded onsite after school tutoring, fitness classes and summer camp at Batavia Apartments for more than 10 years.   None of this is possible without the strong leadership of the Batavia Apartments Resident Services Coordinator who is charged with designing, staffing, implementing and the marketing of these programs.

Camille Simmons is the new  Resident Services Coordinator and she comes to the position as a Mom of four, with corporate experience and years of youth programing at Calvary Church.

Although she lives in Montgomery, she would tell you she is already impressed by the caring community of Batavia.

Welcome Camille! We look forward to continuing our long standing partnership with our neighbors on East Wilson.

Success By 6 Scholarship awarded $10,850
from 100 Women Who Care Fox Valley
Batavia United Way Board Members and elementary school teachers Lisa Hillquist and Cecelia Hoffman received the ultimate surprise at Hoover-Wood Elementary School on the morning of May 4th. Members of 100 Women Who Care -Fox Valley walked into Lisa's Classroom and presented both teachers with a check for $10,850 for the Success By Six Kindergarten Enrichment Scholarship following a catchy musical introduction by 100 Women Co-Founder Theoni Limouris which had the kids clapping and stomping their feet.

The need for this Scholarship was identified by these teachers after years of running a summer "Kinder Camp" where they discovered several children who needed a boost in social, emotional and academic skills to catch up to their peers.
SB6 funds a large portion of the cost of Kindergarten Enrichment (the second half of the school day) which is administered by the Batavia Park District.

Students must financially qualify for the SB6 scholarship and limited space is available. Interested families should contact their elemetary school or Batavia United  Way early for consideration.

100 Women Fox Valley was Co-Founded by Batavians Theoni Limouris and Karen Hollis. for the purpose of raising funds for worthy area charities with a "power in numbers" approach.  The group meets 4 times per year and each member, or team of two,  commits to a check for $100 at each of the four meetings.

Each member or team can nominate a charity to be awarded the group proceeds.  Three nominations are randomly pulled from the pool and a short presentation is made by, or on behalf of, the selected charities. Members then vote on where the donation is awarded.

Each school year, Batavia United Way works to replenish funds for this scholarship and the community has been very supportive. We are grateful to 100 Women Who Care for helping us expand our reach this year. Watch for an update on SB6 awards at the beginning of the school year.
THANK YOU 100 Women for making a difference in the lives of so many children!
