WILMINGTON, NC - Designed as the first of the ten fast battleships to join the American fleet during World War II, Battleship NORTH CAROLINA embodied the need for speed to keep up with powerful new carriers.

 

In celebration of the Battleship's 50th anniversary in Wilmington, on August 6, 2011, from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm, the grounds will be host to and build on the desire for acceleration and adrenaline in their Need for Speed event.

 

An exhilarating day filled with interactive exhibits and performances, this program in Battleship Park is free to the public. It is truly about the fun and games but this isn't your everyday car show.

 

Attendees will be challenged to compete and qualify to win not one but two racing getaways. One qualified winner will be awarded two (2) grandstand tickets to the Bank of America 500 with accommodations at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 15, 2011 and another qualified contestant will win two (2) tickets to Nascar's final race of the year along with hotel accommodations and airfare in Homestead, Florida. Additional speedy prizes will be given away.

 

The Battleship recommends all get ready to get their speed on and start practicing for qualifying games including:

 

  • Battleship Derby
  • Hot Dog Eating contest
  • Minute to Win It Games (Junk in the Trunk, Hut Hut Hike, Hoop De Loop, Ping Tac Toe, Speed Eraser)
  • Pit Stop Challenge
  • Remote Control Race Track
  • Speed Pitch

More excitement will be had as Hendricks Motorsports official 2011 No. 88 National Guard/AMP Energy Chevrolet Impala Showcar will still the spotlight in the winners circle.

 

A must stop by and see is the mobile Game Truck where participants can play the fast paced racing game Blur.

 

Other activities will also fill the day with exhibitions from:

  • Jeff Gordon
  • Low Range 4x4
  • National Speed 

Delicious food with play time for the kids including a bounce house and slide will keep the whole family entertained.

 

But most impressive of all is the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA. She will remain open during the event so please plan to come early or stay late and visit the power behind it all. Ship admission is charged to tour.

The Battleship NORTH CAROLINA is self-supported, not tax supported and relies primarily upon admissions to tour the Ship, sales in the Ship's Store, and donations to the Friends of the Battleship.
