Winter Storm Watch in Effect for Our Region

A W inter Storm Watch is in effect starting late tonight (Tuesday 3/20) and through tomorrow evening (Wednesday 3/21 ).

Our morning and evening commutes tomorrow may be impacted by snow, sleet or ice. It looks like heavy wet snow is possible, and we may get a number of inches of accumulation - some reports are saying 5 inches or more!

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) treats and plows most roads in Fairfax County. VDOT crews begin plowing when two inches of snow have fallen. Crews prioritize interstate highways, major roads and main subdivision roads.  After a storm ends, VDOT aims to have plowed one passable lane on all roads within the following time frames :

2-4" of snow: 24 hours
4-6" of snow: 48 hours
6" or more: More than 72 hours

VDOT is responsible for 13,585 miles of road in Northern Virginia, so please be patient as their crews work hard to get to your street.

REMINDERS:

- Try to complete essential errands before the storm hits. With fewer cars on the road, VDOT trucks have more room to treat the roads.

- Park in driveways or coordinate with neighbors to park on the same side of the road. This will allow a larger path when plows begin to focus on neighborhood streets.

- Take frequent breaks and exercise caution when attempting to shovel heavy wet snow. (Harvard Health Blog: Protect Your Heart When Shoveling Snow)

- Visit virginiadot.org/novaemergency for frequent VDOT press releases, important messages, FAQs and other resources.

- Follow VDOT's local updates on Twitter @vadotnova and Fairfax County's local updates on Twitter @fairfaxcounty.
