Dear Church,
I'm antsy. Well, I have always been a bit impatient and edgy, and they don't call me "Short Attention Span Steve" for nothing! But of late, I've been more antsy than usual. Maybe it's my dietary regimen; too much coffee and Diet Coke and not enough roughage! Maybe I need more sleep, or a vacation, or a different hobby. Whatever!
But if I am honest, I know the source of my angst; politics. I have been over stimulated, as have many of you, by the constant blitz of messages on television, radio, road signs, mailboxes, and sensitive conversations. I have grown weary of the bickering of the candidates, the hype of the constitutional amendments, and the proclamation of fear that undergirds all of it. "The sky is falling, the country will go to hell in a hand basket, the end is near, we're going off the cliff...unless you vote in a certain way!" I am offended by those who tell me how I should vote, and I have been disheartened by those who throw up their hands and say, "I'm just not even going to bother to vote!"
Let me share with you three bullet-points that seem to talk me down from the edge when I get this way.
- Voting is an enormously important privilege that we have in this democracy. To not vote is to be non-patriotic. To not vote should disqualify us from complaining when the results are decided.
- For those who have said, "This is the most important election ever!" I say that this is true of every election. The issues always change, and the elections are always important. Is 2012 more significant than 1865, when our nation voted to end slavery, or 1932 when Americans selected a President to lead them out of the Great Depression, or 1971, when the voting age was lowered to 18? This year is important. Period.
- God will still be God on November 7th. I don't know which candidates God wants to be elected, or what directions God wants our nation to go. I'm not even sure God has an opinion! But I do know that we are called to pray for our leaders whomever they turn out to be.
So I am left with Psalm 46 - Luther's psalm. "Be still...and know that I am God. Supreme among the nations, supreme over the whole earth." Steve, relax. Be still. God is with us, so take a breath...then go vote!
See you in Church,
Pastor Steve
