BEACON PLACE NEWS
Kids Growing with the Beacon Green Program
Beacon Green Field Trip to Liberty Prairie Reserve
Beacon Green is a summer-long program at Beacon Place Community Center designed to engage and build knowledge and awareness of nutrition, gardening, leadership, respect and responsibility.

Kids aged 9 through 13 come to Beacon Place twice per week to learn how to grow food right in their own backyards! But they end up learning much, much more.

"Beacon Green provides structure to kids who typically have none," said Barb Karacic, Executive Director of Beacon Place. "The garden needs them every week to grow and prosper. The children learn responsibility, and leave so proud of what they've accomplished."

There are 12 children enrolled in the program, themed this year as James and the Giant Peach. The children are reading the book together, have made clay models and drawings of the characters, built and painted birdhouses, and planted produce to go along with the story. They record their progress in journals every day, teaching them structure, organization and long-term commitment.

Did You Know?

More than 255,000 children in 13 counties across Northern Illinois (including Lake County) receive free lunch during the school year,

but only 6,000 have access to free lunch in the summer.

Nearly 10% of those hungry kids are served

throughout the summer at Beacon Place.

A Visit from Alderman Sam Cunningham
Alderman Sam Cunningham stopped by Beacon Place on a busy summer day to chat with volunteers and Beacon Place leaders and share his appreciation for the work they're doing. A native of this same Waukegan community, Cunningham knows well the challenges that Waukegan children face.

In the 1980s, when he was growing up in the Beacon Place neighborhood, children were routinely exposed to violence and crime. The house that is home to Beacon Place holds negative historical significance for the people in the neighborhood. Once known as "Castle Grayskull," the house was a target for drug addicts and prostitutes.

Since 1999, Alderman Cunningham has been diligently working to restore the Waukegan community with partner organizations like Beacon Place.

"The only way for young men and women to rid themselves of ghetto is to be educated," Cunningham said. "And that's what I love about Beacon Place. It's an outlet - a safe haven - for education and the protection of the people in the community."

Today, Beacon Place has not only transformed the house, but the neighboring park and the mindsets of its neighbors.

"The neighborhood is alive with positive energy," said Alderman Cunningham. "Partners like Beacon Place are transforming the mindsets of parents and kids, and as a result, the whole community. The only way to change the community is to change the attitudes of the people living there. We're going to protect Beacon Place as they are protecting us."

Thank you, Alderman Cunningham, for your ongoing support of Beacon Place.

Renovation Update
Thanks to our great partners at ICON Building Group for all of their hard work on behalf of Beacon Place!

This month, plumbing infrastructure and HVAC are being installed, along with structural support in the basement. Beacon Place Board Member Linda Malouf has contributed countless hours coordinating efforts on-site, and is gathering input from community members as the project progresses. Excitement is building among Beacon Place families who are eager to use the new space this fall.

Support Beacon Place with a SmartCar for only $6,000!

A 2008 SmartCar with just 32,000 miles was donated to the Community Church of Lake Bluff & Lake Forest. The church has graciously offered to give 100 percent of the proceeds to Beacon Place.

The car is in excellent condition and has a clean CarFax report. It has been meticulously maintained by Knauz. This efficient and easy-to-park vehicle offers an automatic transmission, leather seats, AM-FM-CD, and the "paddle shift" option that makes driving fun.

Local Businesses Sponsor Special Events at Beacon Place

Throughout the summer, Beacon Place likes to offer special activities to its children, and relies on the generosity of local businesses to help pay for those events. In July, RED Communications LLC sponsored a face-painting tent and petting zoo in honor of Shirley Dillon, who passed away last September and is mother of RED Communications LLC President Catherine Driscoll.

"It was such fun to bring this experience to the children of Beacon Place," stated Driscoll. "My mom was a lifelong volunteer and advocate for at-risk children, so this was the perfect way to honor her on her birthday."

With funding from RED, Beacon Place coordinated with Patch 22 to bring baby donkeys, ducks, goats, bunnies and several squealing piglets to delight the children of Beacon Place.

If your business would like to sponsor an event at Beacon Place, please contact Barb at [email protected]. Our special thanks to all of our sponsors!

Big Thanks to Our Summer Interns!

We want to thank the 13 college student interns who have supported us this summer. They have helped with the Beacon Summer Lunch Bunch program, but have also taken leadership roles in the Beacon Green program, Tweens program, MOMS group, and Tutoring program.

These smart, ambitious college students have been great role models for all of our teen volunteers, especially the teens from the community who have not had many opportunities to spend time with young adults in college.

Dominic LaVitola, along with his brother Adam, play college soccer and have been leading the soccer program at Beacon Place. Dominic recently commented, "We're not just focusing on soccer fundamentals with the kids. It's all about playing together, working as a team and respecting everyone else on the field." Adam agreed and added, "You get the sense that it is important for us to be here for the kids. They find us soon as they get here each day."

Kristina Ring, a Psychology and Spanish major at the University of Illinois, said the experience at Beacon Place has really helped her understand the challenges that these families face. She has interned at other social service agencies but believes that she has benefited much more from her experience at Beacon Place.

"In my other internships, I did a lot of administrative work," said Ring. "Here, it has been hands on with direct contact with kids and families. This was exactly the kind of experience I hoped to gain. I would love to return again. What is happening here is amazing!"

Thank you to all of these wonderful young adults! Together, we're making a difference in the lives of at-risk children within the Waukegan community.

Christmas in July with Abbvie

A team from Abbvie came to Beacon Place to celebrate our Christmas in July event! The group led games and activities and enjoyed interacting with children from the neighborhood.

If your company, office, church group or social group would like to volunteer at Beacon Place, please contact us at [email protected]. We'll be happy to connect you with a volunteer opportunity that's the right fit for your group.

A Message from Barb, Beacon Place Executive Director

Dear Friends,

It's said, "It takes a village!" Nowhere is that clich more of a reality than at Beacon Place every Monday and Thursday from 11:00 to 1:00 pm. To provide more than 250 children with lunch, activities, and backpacks in a two-hour time slot - well, it "takes a village!"

The "village" that volunteers at Beacon Place is unique; more than 50 high school teens, 13 college interns and countless adults come together for every session to volunteer their time and make each day special for the children. Many hands make the work seamlessly easy because of the incredible organization and direction provided by summer lunch program director Barb LaFasto. She has created a team that is really making a difference.

All of Beacon Place's volunteers are working to make 603 McAlister the sunny side of the street - a beacon on the corner that burns bright with the promise of hope and change. We hope you will stop by and see our village. We cannot build our village without you.

With kindest regards,

Barb Karacic

Executive Director
