BEACON PLACE NEWS

We are so excited to report that with your help, we surpassed our goal for the Step Up Fundraising Campaign and raised more than $110,000!

Support for this campaign came from individuals, church and civic groups, corporate donors, schools, grassroots fundraisers, and most importantly, from our Beacon Place community members. The families who participate in Beacon Place programs worked within the community to contribute to the Step Up Campaign as well! These families are committed partners who value the support provided by Beacon Place Programs and truly want to contribute to an agency and community center that they see as a 'beacon of hope' in their community!

In this season of giving and gratitude, we extend our most sincere appreciation to all those who have shared their support and resources with Beacon Place!

Step Up Grassroots fundraising events included...

Beacon Place Two-Year Anniversary!

December 10, 2014 marks the two-year anniversary for Beacon Place! In 24 short months, we have created an agency built upon a partnership of support with the community that provides a hand up, rather than a hand out.

With a leadership board of five, and an army of committed volunteers, we have taken that vision and turned it into a reality. We have established a community center with core programs that work to offer the support desired by the community of families that we serve.

Here is a look at the last two years by the numbers....
  • More than 6,500 lunches served to children in the summer
  • More than 4,650 backpacks with enough food for 27,900 meals
  • Nearly 20,000 volunteer hours of service
  • More than 600 different children and families served through six core programs
  • Complete renovation of a 102-year-old home into a vibrant community center

Holiday Celebrations at Beacon Place
Holiday Celebrations for the kids and families of Beacon Place will be held Saturday, December 13, 2014 from 10:30-1:00. Programs will include a holiday party for the children with games, crafts, treats and a chance to select and wrap presents for their moms or dads!

While the kids are enjoying the holiday fun, parents also will have a chance to shop in our holiday "boutique" for gifts. Families will make a "donation" to Beacon Place for each gift that they select, allowing them to give back and support the programs that they enjoy.

Thank you to all of the many volunteers and donors who are making these wonderful holiday events happen for our community!

If you are interested in learning more or volunteering at these festivities, please email [email protected]

Make Beacon Place a
Part of Your Year-End Tax Planning!

If you're fortunate enough to own stock that has gone up in value since you purchased it, you may want to consider donating stocks to Beacon Place. This will not only help us continue our mission, but it will enable you to reap substantial tax savings.

Gifts of securities include not only publicly traded stocks, but gifts of mutual funds, U.S. Treasury bills and notes, corporate and municipal bonds, and stock in non-publicly held companies.

Here's how it works: If someone owns stock for more than one year that has increased in value, that person can donate the stock to a nonprofit, get a deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock at the time of the transfer (its increased value) and never pay capital gains tax on the appreciated value of the stock. Beacon Place can then liquidate the investment as appropriate and use the financial contribution to sustain our programs!

Please contact our Treasurer, Barb LaFasto, to discuss making a year-end donation of stocks at [email protected]

All other donations made before the end of the year qualify for tax deductions. To donate securely online, Click the DONATE TODAY button below.

Our BIG Thanks to...

A Message from Barb, Beacon Place Executive Director

Dear Friends,

As our second anniversary arrives, I am honored and thankful to all who have helped Beacon Place begin its mission to make a difference.

I cannot express how blessed we are to have so many people from so many different walks of life support Beacon Place and our mission to bridge education and community needs. With your support, we have been able to assist more than 600 families, provide more than 6,500 lunches through the summer program, connect with families from our community and engage them in our programs, and rehab our 100-year-old house in a very short time. Margaret Meade's famous words ring true: "Never underestimate the power of a few committed people to change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Beacon Place is blessed to have committed people changing the world for families in Waukegan! I am so thankful for our hard-working volunteer board, program managers, behind-the-scene volunteers and community members who have made this dream come true.

Our renovated home will open its doors this spring thanks to donations from individual and corporate donors. The house will feature a new teaching kitchen, a library, a technology room and space for meetings. But we're most excited to have heat and windows that open! All in all, this renovation is a huge step for our organization and our community.

I thank each and every one of you for stepping up; it truly takes a village to make a difference. Wishing you a blessed Holiday Season and a healthy Happy New Year.

My best,

Barb Karacic

Executive Director
