October is Disability Awareness Month
RMS PTSA

We have a suggestion for younger readers and one for older ones.  Younger kids will enjoy Why Johnny Doesn't Flap. This  picture book turns the tables on common depictions of neurological difference by drolly revealing how people who are not on the autistic spectrum are perceived by those who are. The autistic narrator's bafflement at his neuro-typical friend's quirks shows that 'normal' is simply a matter of perspective. It is a fun, easy to read book, that is sure to generate lots of conversation with your kids.

Older students will enjoy Fish in a Tree. In this story, a young girl learns that her dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. With the help of a teacher, her confidence grows and she feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there's a lot more to her-and to everyone-than a label, and that great minds don't always think alike.
Family Education Movie - ANGST
RMS PTSA

Please join us for a documentary movie  "Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety."  It will be screened in the RMS Gym on  Tuesday, October 10th at 7:00 PM. Watch the trailer here.

The film lasts 56 minutes and explores anxiety, its causes, effects, and what we can do about it.  It features interviews with kids and young adults and includes discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects. Anxiety was the number one issue voted on by families at our school last year and is in the top four this year.

After Hours is an after school enrichment program run in partnership with RMS and the City of Redmond. Each semester, we offer clubs, classes, and field trips. During the Wednesday early release period, we run youth-designed clubs for students to choose between, generally an athletic club, an art/culture club, and a STEM club. Our first session, starting Wednesday October 4th, will have Reaction Science, USA Sports, and Visual Art. Register here today with code #8850 or contact [email protected]  with questions.

October is International Walk to School Month

The City of Redmond has provided calendars for students to track their mode of transportation to school for the month and the school will be covering this issue during PACE time. All qualifying trips to school should be recorded on student calendars which are due at the end of the month.

For each calendar returned, our PTSA will receive $10 from the City. As students walk/ride the bus/bike to school, please remind your students of safety along our roads and please drive slowly and carefully in the neighborhood. Students don't always look for cars doing the unexpected (U-turns, sudden increases in speed to make a light, etc.).
