What do you do when the wind is howling, the ground is crunchy with ice and you are feeling the chill of winter? Well, it is time to get creative! With older age sometimes comes the reality that getting out of the house is hard in the winter. So, for those long winter days, we have come up with some ideas for seniors at home or even for those who are in a group setting.


going to the movies
So many movies today are geared toward a younger audience (think teen vampire romance or Pixar!), that it can be like searching through a haystack to find a gem for older generations.  If you are looking for a way to spend some movie time with an elderly person at home, you may need to look back a few years to find some "oldies but goodies" you can rent or download from services like Netflix!  If you don't want to join a movie subscription service, think about purchasing the DVD from Amazon. 

 

Long nights, shorter days, and bitter cold can make anyone want to crawl back into bed and stay there with a good book all day. But, when symptoms of depression start to take over - either for yourself or your loved one - it may be due to a real disorder called "SAD" or "Seasonal Affective Disorder."

I don't know about you, but this is about that time of the year when I'm really sick of winter! Right after Thanksgiving, winter is wonderful - the anticipation of the holidays and the crisp air.  I can't wait for the first snow. But, by mid-February, I am aching for some warm breezes and sunshine.

 

For people who have mobility issues, winter can be especially tough. Many elderly people are sort of stuck indoors for the winter because of a fear of falling or other health concerns. That can mean caregivers have less "to do" as well.
