Greetings!
INDEPENDENCE DAY Before there was a "4th" there was "4th of July," and before that there was "Independence Day," a day to celebrate the signing of one of the world's great documents by 56 brave men who, by their signature, declared their independence from one of the the world's strongest countries and pledged to each other their "lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor."
It was not an empty pledge.
Before the War of the Revolution was over, five signers were caught by the British and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes burned. Nine fought and died in the War.
When I lived in Philadelphia for eight years as a medical student and then as an intern and a resident, Independence Hall was surrounded on two sides by a park-like lawn not far from downtown. It had not yet been "Disney-fied" and it was possible to walk through the rooms and actually touch the Liberty Bell, see where Washington and Franklin sat, and smell the summer air that came through the open windows that fateful Spring of 1776.
There were benches on the lawn out back where a stressed-out medical student could sit and study, with the ghosts of Jefferson and Franklin and Washington looking over his shoulder. And maybe even the spirit of Doctor Benjamin Rush, first Surgeon General of the Continental Army...

Across Walnut Street was a small square, another green lawn where thousands of men my age and younger had been thrown into a mass grave after being captured by the British in 1777 and held in a prison that looked out over Independence Hall. Many died of smallpox and cholera. Years later it had been designated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution and there was a wonderful statue of Washington that stood guard. I always stopped to read the inscription before heading back to my little apartment at 108 North Mole Street. The inscription read: "Beneath this stone rests a solder of Washington's army who died to give you liberty."
I always wondered who he was, where he had come from, and the passion that drove him to give up his life in the cause of freedom. Would I? Could I? At the time I thought the question simply rhetorical but it has become more germane with the passage of time. It is more important than ever before to comprehend the value of liberty. And to remember the price.
Happy Independence Day!

TIPS FROM JOANN

CLASSIC FACIAL GENESIS
Healthy, clear, luminous skin without blotchiness or brown spots and with small pores is at the top of almost every patient's wish list. To address those concerns, we evolved an innovative treatment series that combines our Signature Anti-aging Facial Skin Treatment with Dermal Planing and our comfortable and effective high-tech laser treatments.
We call this approach FACIAL GENESIS.
We follow the dermal planing skin treatment with the comfortable 1064 YAG laser that reduces the appearance of broken vessels and stimulates collagen growth while improving the tone and texture of the skin and minimizing pore size. This, in turn, is followed by the pulsed light treatment, or IPL that improves brown spots.
No anesthesia or numbing is required and there is no down time at all.
A treatment series consists of three such sessions, three to five weeks apart.
The regular price of this series is $2100 but until the end of July we will be offering the entire Facial Genesis package at the low price of $1400. If priced individually, the total cost is $2600. Facial Genesis does a lot of good things for your skin all at once. It's maintenance of the best kind.
Until then, remember to laugh and love your skin.

BELOTERO BALANCE
|
Aesthetic Medicine's Newest Wrinkle Filler
Don't be dismayed if you haven't heard of it yet. BELOTERO BALANCE is the newest wrinkle filler to be FDA-approved although it's already been in use in Europe for a decade. Manufactured by Merz, makers of RADIESSE, BELOTERO BALANCE is a hyaluronic acid-based wrinkle filler which places it in the same family as Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane.
What's different is the so-called cross-linking of the molecule which enables it to be used very close to the surface of the skin. It is perfect for those very fine lines on the lower third of the cheek as well as in the deep crow's feet. Ordinary fillers have little effect on these areas but our experience with BELOTERO BALANCE indicates they can be removed almost as effectively as if they had been erased. Clinical trials by Merz show the product can last almost a year.
As instructors for Merz, we were one of the first offices in the country to be supplied with the product and it has been well-received by the many patients on whom we have used it.
You'll be hearing more about it soon and we will, of course, continue to have it available to our patients.
