Dear Neighbors

This weekend's temperatures are in the fifties which is quite the temperature drop.  There is a possibility of some rain tonight or tomorrow which would sure be nice.  But although it's a little cloudy today, the weather is just fine to get out and do some of the activities.

The Calendar Crew is so proud of this whole community which has come together to make a happy Christmas for many of our children and adults who are just barely getting by.  Beaver Creek School has provided presents for 99 children, the Beaver Creek Kiwanis are gifting food and presents to 60 children and their parents, and the Beaver Creek Adult Center is doing the same for 17 children and their parents.  Also, many individuals from the community and from around the Verde Valley have adopted families here.   

Today is the last day that Christmas House is open at the Beaver Creek Gasmart.  On Sunday Kiwanis will distribute toys, food and some gift cards to 22 adopted families.  Kiwanis will also provide Big 5 gift cards for the 6 orphaned men at the Olive Branch group home in Montezuma Haven for a new pair of shoes and provide some assistance to others in need.  Thanks to the Lake Montezuma Women's Club and the Sedona Lutheran Church turkeys were available at the Beaver Creek Food Bank last Saturday.  Beaver Creek Kiwanis bought 28 turkeys for Beaver Creek Transit to deliver to those unable to come to the food bank.  Rask''s Auto Service is continuing to collect winter food for the food bank.  The Giving Angels of Sedona sent a large bag of presents to each of the Meals on Wheels recipients and the Verde Valley Senior Center is sending additional items to several MOW folks who need it most. 

The Redrock Ranger District in conjunction with the Beaver Creek Trails Coalition is enjoying some Dutch oven treats at the Forestglen Trail Head on Wickiup Mesa prior to improving the last leg of the Wickiup Mesa Trails this morning.  From Montezuma Ave, take Cliffside Trail up to Geronimo and continue on Geronimo to Forestglen.  Turn right and continue to the trail head.  Volunteers are welcomed!
Dump the Drugs Here
A guided bird walk is available at Montezuma Well this morning and a bunch of club and organizations are meeting today.  Another chance to Dump your Drugs today is at the Beaver Creek Adult Center including both prescription and nonprescription medications for people and pets.  There probably won't be another chance to dump locally until May.  So please get to the Adult Center between 10 AM and noon.  And don't forget that the Beaver Creek Library is open on Saturdays. except for holidays, where artwork is on display and a new room is open to all.  The Beaver Creek School Winter Concert is this coming Wednesday.

Upcoming December Special Events 

Saturday, 12/16--Trail Volunteers Needed.  Please join us tomorrow to work on the final segment of Sunset Loop: a 0.3 mile re-alignment of the southern segment.  Staff from the Coconino National Forest/Red Rock District will be on hand to assist our community volunteers in this important work. We will be meeting at the Forestglen Trailhead at 8:30 AM for cowboy coffee and cobbler, and to receive our orientation before heading out to build some trail.  The South Sunset Loop segment traverses a scenic hillside, relocating the trail to higher ground and avoiding some problem erosion spots.  It will be a trail to be proud of. Sat thru 12/16-Last Day! The Kiwanis Christmas House next to the Beaver Creek Gasmart  is open Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM.  Please call Wyona at 274-2032 for more information.  Christmas decorations donations may be made at the Kiwanis Clothes Closet during their open hours: Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sat from 10 to 3:00 PM or at the Christmas House. 
 
Saturday, 12/16-Dump the Drugs   is back at the Beaver Creek Adult Center from 10 AM to Noon.  This event gives an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted prescription or over-the-counter medication (including ones for pets).  Please drop medications off at the Beaver Creek Adult Center (across from Cricket's), 4250 E. Zuni Way in Lake Montezuma.  The event is sponsored by the BC Community Action Team, YC Sheriff's Office and MATFORCE.

The Good Things Happening at Beaver Creek School

Cheryl Guth (4th Grade Teacher) Reports:

  • Each year the fourth graders decorate a paper turkey with their families for a contest in class. Students work with their families to create something spectacular, and they did! The turkeys were beautiful and the class had a great time.
  • Students are having fun working on the door contest which is a way to show students traditions from around the world. Each class has a country that they learn about, they then teach the other kids about the country through the decoration of their classroom doors.
Margee Cowan (College and Career Readiness Counselor) Reports:
  • This fall the eighth grade has got to go to both Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and Yavapai College the Sedona Campus.  By getting to go and visit these campuses the students can more readily see areas that are of interest to them.  It also helps them decide on classes they would like to take in high school to prepare them for selecting a college or university.  The cooking and baking classes at Yavapai were extremely fun because they learned they got to eat what they cooked.   Seventh grade also visited Yavapai College but in Clarkdale.  They did a scavenger hunt around campus and learned a lot about what Yavapai College has to offer.  It is a "good thing" to make students aware of local opportunities both educationally and career wise and it is such a pleasure to expand the students' horizons. 
Katrina Sacco ( Principal) Reports:
  • Basketball season is off to a great start. The boys and girls teams will participate in the tournament at Clarkdale this weekend.
  • The 21
    st Century Friday enrichment program will be going to Phoenix to see the Nutcracker on December 15
    th. We are excited that our students will have an opportunity to see this professional ballet production
  • Mrs. Goepfrich's first grade class has been focused on college and career readiness. They had a career day where parents presented to the class to share about their careers. It is wonderful to see students developing a sense of understanding about the possibilities for their futures.
  • Mrs. Quintana's third grade class has taken a story from their classwork and turned it into a play. Each student is working hard to memorize lines and participate. This extension of learning exemplifies a an enriching experience where students can work on listening and speaking skills while simultaneously learning about story elements and other Arizona state standards.
  • Our Preschool through fifth grade classes are all practicing for the upcoming Winter Concert on December 20
    th. We are looking forward to the performance and hope than many families will join us.
  • Allie Wheeler and Katrina Sacco attended the annual Mega Conference in Goodyear. This conference gives information from the state, and identifies best practices. This year the conference was focused on helping schools to provide enrichment opportunities to students with an emphasis on art and music education.

  • The Saturday Food Bank staff distributed turkeys that were purchased from funds from the Lake Montezuma Women Civic Club and a fundraiser by the Lutheran Church in Sedona.
  • The teaching staff will receive additional funds this month from the Classroom Site Fund voted on the voters of Arizona in 2000. We have a great teaching staff and it is great to be able to provide additional money to their salaries!
  • Mrs. Dones is working on coordinating Christmas gifts for families who have requested assistance.  Several people in the community have stepped up to adopt families.  This year 99 students will receive gifts. This time of year, that support to our children is heartwarming.
  • We are appreciative   of the community for the continued support to our school and children. We hope people remember Beaver Creek School during TAX CREDIT Season!

Saturday, 12/16-The Historic Beaver Creek Rock School Building is open to the public from 10 AM to 1 PM.  Docents from the Beaver Creek Preservation & Historical Society will be on hand to answer questions. 

Saturday, 12/16--The Lutheran Women's Missionary League  meets at 10 AM at Grace Lutheran Community Church. The function of this church auxiliary is to help members of the community. Please call 928-567-4608 for further information.

Saturday, 12/16-- The Phantasm Book Club meets  at 10 AM in the Beaver Creek Library. This is the last meeting before the club goes on hiatus.  Contact Starchild the   Ringleader  [email protected] if anyone is interested in a different day or time for the club.
