Dear Neighbors

Buzzard Bonfire Game

Our two largest and most familiar community services are undergoing some changes in order to continue those services at the level that we have come to expect.  Next year Beaver Creek School District will operate with a four-day week for students and Montezuma Rimrock Fire District plans to continue and perhaps expand shared services with the Camp Verde Fire District.  Meanwhile they continue as popular community meeting venues with upcoming events scheduled at both in May including the return of Taco Tuesday (on Cinco de Mayo) at the fire station and an all-years reunion at Beaver Creek School on May 2.

On Tuesday, 4/21, the community will get the opportunity to study the proposed Montezuma Crossing Trail.  If completed, this trail will be the first of a series of neighborhood connectors and hiking trails in the Beaver Creek area.  Please don't miss your opportunity to see the slide presentation in the school boardroom.  This weekend is another one of those activity rich ones.  On Saturday Kiwanis Clothes Closet hosts its first Repurpose

Trek for Tech

Day in the parking lot, there is a Free Dump Day sponsored by the City of Cottonwood, and the VV Humane Society is hosting a family photo shoot fundraiser.

LMWCC Olio Act

Earlier in April was another special event packed weekend.  The Lake Montezuma Women's Civic Club entertained us with their hilarious melodrama and olio, the Buzzard Bonfire was enjoyed by young and older, and the Tech for Trek runners and walkers toured Lake Montezuma very quickly and spectacularly in their colorful event T-shirts.  POB's (pats on back) to all the volunteers who made these possible and the participants who made the events fun to be at.

Ready to hear about the new crossing trail,

Lost, Found, Fostered & Adopted Animals

Early this month a Shih Tzu was found and taken to the Verde Valley Humane Society.  Our community shared this information and the owner was located but surrendered the dog.  That little black dog now belongs to Beaver Creek resident Elizabeth Harrington who came to his rescue and gave him a forever home.  She has named him Skoshie III, and he now has a brother, Teddy, age 12.

Fortunately most of the Beaver Creek lost dogs and some of the other animals are found thanks to all the efforts of this community.  If you'd like to help in ways other than spreading the word and keeping a look out for lost animals, please consider the following.  Tessa, a VVHS volunteer has a special mission to find foster placements for small dogs.  She can be contacted at [email protected] .  The VVHS is always seeking good volunteers.  Stop by and pick up a volunteer application.  You can help with dogs, cats, events, fundraising, photography, front desk and much more.  Join the team!

Is your pet missing?  Remember to check at the Verde Valley Humane Society, 928-634-7387, or go there in person: 1520 W. Mingus Ave in Cottonwood. Our county Animal Control Officers take found animals there.  Please keep this number handy.

Teacher-Ranger-Teacher Program Summer 2015

Montezuma Castle/Tuzigoot National Monument's Outreach Division is pleased to announce an opportunity for two local teachers to infuse their teaching skills with NPS-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education resources.   The teacher-ranger-teachers will get a firsthand look at the natural and cultural resources that make these locations unique, while they spend seven weeks at our monuments.  They will be asked to develop at least one lesson plan and share what they learned in their classroom and with their colleagues. They will receive a $3000 living expense stipend and earn three graduate credit hours from University of Colorado, Denver, upon the successful completion of the program.

The session is scheduled to start June 8. The work week is Monday - Thursday, with Friday fieldtrips.  For more information about the program and an application, please contact Mary Ontiveros electronically at [email protected] or by phone at 928-567-5276 x228. Additional information is also available at www.nps.gov/moca, our website.
