Dear Neighbors

The weather is looking pretty good today to come out and enjoy the annual Kiwanis Chili & Pie Dinner for donations.  This event raises funds that are mostly used to support children's activities thus you will see community children volunteering their help throughout the evening.  (And Kay Nye, owner of Cricket's) made the pie!)

If the forecast is correct, this will be a showery weekend.  So that makes it ideal to spend a little time at the fire station on Saturday participating in a health screening.  It's free and will be interesting for the whole family.  Saturday has lots of other scheduled activities, many of which are indoors.  However a little shower or two probably won't spoil the bird walk at Montezuma Well.

New for our local area is that the National Monuments of the Verde Valley are partnering with the Verde Valley Archeology Center in Camp Verde.  The Field Institute from the Center will be offering archaeology classes and guided hiking field seminars.  Please see the news release below.

ADOT has issued a "Last Call for safety message contest entries".  The deadline is February 19.  The details are below.

Thursday, 2/16--The Friends of Beaver Creek Library board  will meet at  2:30 PM in the Beaver Creek School conference room. All members and interested parties are invited to attend. Contact Judy McBride at 928-567-4648 for more information.
 
Thursday, 2/16-The Kiwanis Chili & Pie Dinner  will be served from 5 to 7 PM at the Montezuma Rimrock Fire Station, 3240 E Beaver Creek Rd in Rimrock. Please come enjoy spending time with your neighbors and meeting some new folks, too. The proceeds will benefit community projects for children and their families in the MR Fire District. Event staff includes: Beaver Creek Kiwanis, Montezuma Rimrock Fire Station Personnel, Beaver Creek School K-Kids and Builders Clubs, our High School Key Club (Mingus, Sedona Sky & Camp Verde), as well as many of our friends.  www.bckiwanis.org 

Saturday, 2/18-Free Non-Fasting Health Screening by Northern AZ Healthcare at the Montezuma Rimrock Fire Station from 8 AM to 1 PM.  No appointment needed.  Do you know your numbers???  Blood sugar, diabetes risk, cholesterol numbers, blood pressure?  During a 20 minute nonfasting screening, a health professional will go over the results with you.  (See flyer below)

Saturday, 2/18--The Men's Breakfast  at the Beaver Creek Baptist Church welcomes new friends and old at 8 AM. Please call Pastor Miller at 928-567-4557 for further information.
 
Saturday, 12/17--Bird Walks at Montezuma Well  will be hosted by NPS from 9 AM to 11 AM the first and third Saturdays of each month.  Meet at the Montezuma Well picnic area.  For more information please contact NPS at 928-567-3322, ext 0.

Saturday, 2/18--The Lutheran Women's Missionary League meets at 10 AM at Grace Lutheran Community Church. The function of this church auxiliary is to help members of the community. Please call 928-567-4608 for further information.

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE OFFICIALLY PARTNERED WITH VERDE VALLEY ARCHAEOLOGY CENTER
 
The National Monuments of the Verde Valley are excited to announce a new partnership with the Verde Valley Archaeology Center.  The Verde Valley Archaeology Field Institute will allow visitors greater access to archaeological sites in the Verde Valley led by professional guides.  It is our hope people will appreciate how interconnected all the sites in the Verde Valley truly are.
 
Verde Valley Archaeology Field Institute is a program of the Verde Valley Archaeology Center. Through the Field Institute we are proud to offer archaeology classes and guided hiking field seminars exploring a variety of archaeological subjects such as pottery identification, prehistoric architectural and agricultural methods, and more.

Last call for ADOT safety message contest entries

Deadline to enter is Sunday, Feb. 19

PHOENIX - Just a few days remain to submit entries in the Arizona Department of Transportation's Safety Message Contest.
The deadline to enter the contest is Sunday, Feb. 19. Safety message entries can be submitted at azdot.gov/signcontest . ADOT has received more than 7,000 submissions since the contest launched Feb. 6.
"We are thrilled with the overwhelming response to the contest," said Kevin Biesty, ADOT Deputy Director for Policy. "People are seeing the signs and talking about the safety messages. Our goal is to get them to take those messages to heart, improving safety for everyone on the roads."
When creating your message, follow these guidelines:
·          Signs accommodate three lines and 18 characters, including spaces, per line
·          #Hashtags, phone numbers and website addresses are not allowed
·          Signs can't accommodate emoji
After Feb. 19, ADOT will review submissions and select 15 messages to advance to the next round. In March, we'll post the finalists on our website and let the public decide the winner.
The winning message will appear on D ynamic Message Signs for two days in April.
