Beaver Creek eNews

October 23, 2015

Dear Neighbors
Welcome to a great October week in the Beaver Creek area.  Looks like highs will be in the 70's with mostly sunny skies.  Couldn't ask for better weather!  So far this month the area has received 1 ¾ inches of rainfall.  Unfortunately the lightening early last week took out the Internet wiring for the eNews which was finally repaired yesterday.  Apologies to all who sent inputs which were stalled due to our very limited capability during that time.  Someday we'll have broadband.  Can't wait!

Meanwhile our fire district has a board opening since one member has had to resign due to moving out of the district.  Applications for appointment to fill the remainder of the vacant term are available at the station or at www.mrfd-fire.org.  Our first responders continue to help with many community activities when they can.  In the photo taken by Superintendent Karin Ward, Chief Keller and crew are helping to prepare the area used by first through fourth grade students at Beaver Creek School for their after school basketball teams.  The station also sponsored a Saturday free flu shot event that was free to the community.

The AARP Tax Aide sites have offered their free services for many years in the Verde Valley.  This is very rewarding volunteer work.  If you'd like to help out, the contact information is below. On Saturday the Rimrock Writers will meet for the second time at BC Public School Library, and the OLLI Verde River Valley Nature presentation will be in the board room on Wednesday.  The following weekend are the Halloween Spooktacular and the Friends of Beaver Creek Library annual meeting.  More detailed listings are below.

Rimrock Writers Meet

from Barbara Hitchcock

Are you an aspiring writing looking for a group to support your efforts?  Rimrock Writers is a new support group for writers meeting at the Beaver Creek Library from 10 AM to 12 PM on the 4th Saturday of each month.  The first meeting on September 29th was attended by eight writers and was both interesting and informative.  The next meeting will be on Saturday, October 24.  All who are interested in writing, whether just beginning or more experienced, are invited.  Your writing may be of any type-fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or news writing, for example.  You may choose to read your work aloud in class and get feedback from others if you like, but it is not necessary.  We will be encouraging and supporting each other in our personal writing goals, using exercises to develop our writing skills, giving honest criticism of each others' work, and discussing issues related to writing.  Please join us!  Adults only, over 18 please.
Tax Aide Volunteers Needed
                              From Judith Peebles
                                        Local Coordinator, AARP Tax-Aide Cottonwood

AARP's Tax-Aide program provides FREE income tax preparation services for seniors and low to mid income residents of all ages. We are looking for volunteers to prepare returns (Counselors) and greet taxpayers as they arrive for their appointments (Greeters).  All returns are prepared on a computer and volunteer Counselors do not need to be tax experts - we will train you!  Tax training is not required for Greeters.

Training takes place in January and our tax season runs for 11 weeks from the beginning of February to April 15. All volunteers are expected to work one 4-hour shift each week.  Last season we prepared over 2,000 Federal returns and about 2,100 State returns at our three sites in the Verde Valley, Camp Verde, Cottonwood and Sedona.

We have a wonderful group of enthusiastic volunteers but are always looking for more so we can serve more taxpayers. If you are interested in joining us, please contact me at 928-649-5457 or [email protected]
