Ben's Buzz
 
The photo in today's header is the BFCCPS Robotics club who have been meeting every Wednesday and Sunday in the Red Brick school.  Students in Grade 5-7 have been learning to make robots using Lego bricks, motors and sensors, write software to control the robots, and have some good old fun competing and learning from each other. As teams, they are also preparing for First Lego Lego (FLL) competitions starting in November. This year's theme is HydroDynamics. In the competition, the teams will demonstrate a robot that can solve 15 missions within 2.5 minutes; and present a solution to judges to improve human consumption of water. I'd like to extend a hearty thanks to the parent volunteers Mr. Ramesh Balan and Mrs. Upasana Pendkar who are making this opportunity possible for students in Grades 5-7!  

Students in Kindergarten through Grade Two had an incredibly exciting visit from Mr. Paul Molla at Random Smile on the morning of Friday, September 29th.  Our students were so excited to receive several bags of assorted playground materials including balls and hula hoops. We also received a number of board games that will be put to good use during any upcoming indoor recess days. We invite all parents to visit Random Smile to learn about ways you can volunteer or fund raise to spread more smiles in our community.  Many thanks to Mrs. O'Brien for organizing this! 


The Board of Trustees is in need of members to serve on the Facilities, Finance, Governance, Human Resources and Mission committees.  If you missed the Special Edition of Ben's Buzz  we encourage you to take a closer look here.  Find the biographies and emails for the current trustees here.
  
If you haven't had the chance to meet our School Psychologist Dr. Prevelige, I hope you will take a moment to stop by her Faculty Page, Dr. P will be providing information regularly to parents on a wide range of topics through periodic blog postings on our website.  

I'm sure your students won't let you forget, but please remember that BFCCPS will be closed on Monday, October 9th and Tuesday October 10th. 
Please enjoy a wonderful long weekend with your families. 

Lastly, a friendly reminder that BFCCPS does not open daily until 7:30 am.   Students can not be dropped off before that time as there is no supervision available before 7:30 am.

Announcements: 
 
Students in Grades 3-5 are invited to join Mrs. Urkevic for the 
first Science Club in the 2017-2018 school year. Sessions will meet seven Wednesdays or seven Thursdays. Class sizes are limited and registration is first come, first serve.  


Students in Grades 6-8 are invited to audition for the Middle School Musical!  

There are opportunities to perform on stage or to join the stage crew. Students also have the chance to audition for a new position, the  Director's Assistant.

The  Franklin Community Gardens is looking for student volunteers from Grades 6-8 to help re-build the garden beds. 

The event will take place  Sunday, October 15th   from 9:00 AM  to finish - (the job is expected to take most of the day as we have about 50 beds to build) Students should a rrive just before  9:00 AM  if possible.

The popular  Grade Seven Epilepsy Clothing Fundraiser will be held October 23 through October 27th.  It's time to clean out your closets, go through your drawers, replace those curtains and worn out towels   and DONATE IT ALL! We encourage you to collect bags from your family, friends and neighbors so that we can meet our minimum of 2,300 lbs of donated items (the equivalent of 150 donated kitchen sized bags)!  

The proceeds will help offset the cost of the Quebec trip for our Seventh Grade family.  Thank you in advance for your support! 

Capstone Corner:
Students in Grade 8 are hard at work on their Capstone Projects and will have announcements, fundraisers and events to share over the coming weeks. Sameen S. is holding a donation drive for baby items for the Medway House.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.  Items will be collected 10/3 through 10/13. 

Justin M will hold a Dine Out Night at the Friendly's in Milford on Thursday, October 5th starting at 3pm to benefit his Capstone Project.  Please print out and present this flyer to have a portion of the proceeds donated to Justin's Capstone project. 

Kelly M. has arranged for Police Officer to visit BFCCPS with a K9 dog to give a demonstration. Students in Grades 4 & 5 will attend an assembly, you can click here to learn more.

Andrew M. will hold a movie night showing the Jungle Book on October 6th for students in Grades K-4 at BFCCPS to raise money for his Capstone project to support National Geographic. Learn more on this flyer.  

Prem P. would like to thank you all for supporting his talent show night! It was a HUGE SUCCESS! For my second part of his capstone project, he has created a music theory club where he will teach kids from grades K-8 how to read and write music. This club is FREE for all students participating. This will be a fun club where we will all learn music together. Details regarding location, time, and dates are in this form. Hope to see you there!

Movie Night for  Raimi P.'s  Capstone Project, please join her for a showing of Smurfs: The Lost Village. The event will be held on October 13th from 6 - 7:45 pm.

Diya and Gurleen will host a Photography Competition for their Capstone Projects October 16th through October 20th. 

Mia M. will be holding a raffle to win over $100 in gifts from October 10th through the 16th to benefit FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education). Tickets will be $2 for one ticket or $5 for three tickets. Click here for information about food allergies and raffle ticket sales!

Zach S. wil hold a Bracelet Sale for Food Allergy Awareness the week of October 16 through October 20th.  Please see  the attached flyer for all the details. 

Abishek R  will hold a Pin Down Tournament on October 20th to benefit his Capstone Project. Please click here for more details.

Justin M. will be holding a toiletry drive from O ctober 23 through October to benefit Be Like Brit.  Requested items for the orphanage include  SoftSoap Liquid Hand Soap,  Blue Magic Hair Conditioner , and Clorox Disinfecting Wipes.  Please see the attached flyer for more details.

Joe D. is collecting donations for refugees resettling in Worcester County. His drive will take place 10/30 - 11/3. Please see this flyer for more information about refugees and the requested donation items.

Please note that the Capstone Movie nights are not drop off activities, a parent must stay with their students during the event. In accordance with the BFCCPS Health Policies, no food will be permitted during the movie night.

Many hands make light work and the the BFCCPS Yearbook is a great example of this!  Every year students and staff eagerly await the arrival of yearbooks. It is only possible by the collaboration of many volunteers. 
Please review the sign up and see where you can help. 

Please join us on October 16th for our first General Meeting of the year (all parents are welcome) taking place at the school at 7:00pm. Babysitting will be available in the art room for $10 per family for children ages five and up. This will support the Grade 7 Quebec trip. 

Come support the BFCCPS PCO in the tastiest way! Bring this flyer to Chipotle Mexian Grill in Franklin anytime on 10/18 between 4 and 8 pm and the PCO will receive 50% of the sales!  Download, print and bring this flyer with you!
 
The PCO needs YOU! We are looking for chairs for the following committees Direct Donations Campaign (the sooner the better!), Spring Family Social, Family Social Nights, Teacher Appreciation Week. There are jobs here for all, whether you work full time, part time or are a stay at home parent. Remember, PCO programs depend on people stepping up. BFCCPS Banking  will begin on October 5th.  Registrations packets will be sent home to all Kindergarten students via Kid Mail this week.  Any other families that would like to register for BFCCPS Banking can pick up an application in the front office or contact Mrs. Jangareddi by email



Save the Date! BFCCPS Photo Day will take place on October 24th. The PCO will be looking for parent volunteers to assist during the event. Please stay tuned for additional details!

IT'S DESTINATION IMAGINATION SIGN UP TIME!!!

Join us for an information meeting on October 5th at 7:00pm in the pre-school room at the Franklin YMCA to learn more about DI and all that the program has to offer your children.  Franklin Destination Imagination is a 501c3 non-profit organization that operates this after school enrichment program open to all kids from 2nd grade through high school in Franklin, MA.

The Destination Imagination program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students' creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

A Notice from the Central Office: 

Visitors:   All visitors to the school are required to sign in at the Front Office and wear a Visitor's badge. Visitors must be escorted at all times.  Thank you for your help with this!
 
Parking & Parking Lot Safety:  Parking is not allowed in marked reserved spots near the schools main entrance. These spots are reserved for the CCD program staff. 

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures:  Please adhere to the posted arrival and dismissal procedures which are posted  here  our website. If you plan on parking on Queen Street to pick up your children, you must park and walk into the courtyard to pick them up. Students may not walk across the playground to Queen Street regardless of their grade level. This is for their own personal safety. 

Absence and Dismissal Notification: If your child will be absent or tardy from school, Please contact Mrs. Tappin at  ltappin@bfccps.org or at  leave a voice message at the absent and tardy line 508-541-3434 and press 4.  Additionally, if you have to make any dismissal changes please email both your child(ren)'s homeroom teacher AND Mrs. Laura Tappin by email at  ltappin@bfccps.org by no later than 2 pm.

As a reminder, BFCCPS has an  extended absence policy which indicates that extended absences for non-medical reasons for more than 10 consecutive school days will not be approved and will result in dis-enrollment from BFCCPS unless caused by exceptional and unavoidable circumstances, such as a natural disaster, serious accident, or other situation deemed exceptional and unavoidable by the HOS.
