Dear BFCCPS Community, 
 
Welcome back BFCCPS! We hope you had a spectacular February Break.  So far this year, we have incurred two snow days. The last day of school has been adjusted to a half day on June 19th. Any additional unforseen days will be denoted  on this calendar event

I hope you'll be able to join the cast and crew of A Pirate's Life for Me this weekend at the Horace Mann Auditorium. Shows will be held at 7pm on Friday and on Saturday afternoon at 2pm. Advance ticket sales are available only until March 1st, otherwise you can purchase your tickets at the door! All students, faculty and staff are invited to wear their Pirate's Life for Me t-shirts, pirate themed attire and jeans to school on Friday to help get in the spirit! 

BFCCPS is planning to hold a Community Yardsale this spring as a fundraiser for the gymnasium and playgrounds at our new location. We are forming a planning committee for this event. Please email  jbasile@bfccps.org  if you're interested in assisting with this event. 

We are currently seeking an interested candidate from the community to teach our Trimester Three: Classical Enrichment Course "Makerspace." The course description is included just below. The course would meet each Monday from 10:15-11:40 am from March 12 through June 18th.  Interested candidates for this paid position do not require a teaching license but will require both a completed CORI and fingerprinting check.  Please contact Mr. Heater for further details.

Makerspace Instructor Needed:
 
A Makerspace "serves as a gathering point for tools, projects, mentors and expertise. A collection of tools does not define a makerspace. Rather we define it by what it enables: making". A makerspace is a learning environment rich with possibilities".   

In this class, students will have an opportunity to create, explore, and wonder with high & low tech tools. The goal is to inspire students to become participatory learners to uncover their talents, needs, and interests by making, producing, solving, creating, collaborating and thinking.  To accomplish this, students will have access to:
  • programming languages (at least Scratch & Sonic Pi; others are possible based on student requests)
  • audio, visual, and broadcast tools (Audacity, GIMP, Inkscape, OpenShot, Open Broadcaster, green screen, photo and video cameras)
  • Computers: PC (Windows 7 & Linux), Mac, Chromebook, Raspberry Pi
  • Lego & other supplies for model making
  • Books, magazines, websites on project ideas
  • Other tools TBA
Goals/Objectives of the course:
  • Increase student exposure to coding, engineering, video production, and problem solving opportunities.
  • Allow students to pursue projects & areas of their own interest.
  • Grow student skills in seeking out solutions/answers on their own.
Course Requirements:

Students should possess a curious mind, a willingness to try new things, and have minimal fear of failing.
 

Parent Pillar Nights:  
Here at BFCCPS, we strive to assist parents in their role as the Primary Educator of their children. As such, I wanted to highlight an important way that information is available to you, our ongoing Pillar Nights. 

MAP Testing

All parents are invited to join us for the Parent Pillar Night to learn about the MAP Testing Pilot Program.

March 5th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.


Health Curriculum and Vaping Guest Speaker 

Please join us on April 24th at 7:00 pm for a Parent Pillar Night.  During this session we will review the upcoming changes to the BFCCPS Health Curriculum. We will be joined by special guest speaker  Tina Grosowsky the MA  Project Coordinator from the  Central MA Tobacco Free Community Partnership.  Ms. Grosowsky is a member of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School. 

We hope that you will join us for the evening.  Babysitting will be available for children ages five and up at a charge of $10 per family. The proceeds will benefit next year's trip to Quebec.

The BJ's Renewal/New Membership Drive fundraiser is returning  February 26 to March 16th . All new memberships are eligible for a $50  restaurant.com  gift card. It's that time of year again! Keep an eye on your emails for exciting news about this year's Spring Social: basket raffle and ticket information is coming. Most importantly, SAVE THE DATE:  Friday March 23rd . Can't wait to see you there!!

Many hands make light work and the the BFCCPS Yearbook is a great example of this!   Every year students and staff eagerly await the arrival of yearbooks. It is only possible by the collaboration of many volunteers. 

A PCO sponsored Arts Enrichment Assembly is scheduled for Friday, March 9. Crocodile River Music will present an interactive, musical geography experience to grades 5-8 at 9:45 and grades K-4 at 10:45. Workshops will be offered in the afternoon for grades 4 and 8. ALL are encouraged and welcome to attend the performance in the O'Malley Auditorium.  Please also stop by the school to enjoy the Art Installation from the Gallery of African Arts that is on display from Feb. 26 - March 26. Health Office Update:  
  
Cold and flu season is here! Please read the  flu guide for parents.

Cough drops in school: Please remember that cough drops, per the state regulations for schools, are considered an over the counter medication that requires doctor's order and parent permission on file and for them to be administered by the school nurse.  If you have not already given permission for cough drops, the form can be printed  here  or found on the  Health Office website  under the tab "medication administration". Any completed form should be sent in to the Health Office.

A Notice from the Central Office: 

Visitors:   All visitors to the school are required to sign in at the Front Office and wear a Visitor's badge. Visitors must be escorted at all times.  Thank you for your help with this!
 
Parking & Parking Lot Safety: Parking is not allowed in marked reserved spots near the schools main entrance. These spots are reserved for the CCD program staff. 

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures:  Please adhere to the posted arrival and dismissal procedures which are posted  here our website.

Over the winter months, we ask that you do not park on Queen Street to walk in and pick up your children. The Queen Street entrance can be narrow at this time of year due to accumulated snow and or ice making this practice potentially unsafe for both drivers and walkers.  We ask that you please utilize the Express Lane procedures or arrive at Courtyard Dismissal (approximately 3:20) to secure a spot to park in the lot once the general traffic has cleared.

Absence and Dismissal Notification: If your child will be absent or tardy from school, Please contact Mrs. Tappin at  ltappin@bfccps.org or at  leave a voice message at the absent and tardy line 508-541-3434 and press 4.  Additionally, if you have to make any dismissal changes please email both your child(ren)'s homeroom teacher AND Mrs. Laura Tappin by email at  ltappin@bfccps.org by no later than 2 pm.

As a reminder, BFCCPS has an  extended absence policy which indicates that extended absences for non-medical reasons for more than 10 consecutive school days will not be approved and will result in dis-enrollment from BFCCPS unless caused by exceptional and unavoidable circumstances, such as a natural disaster, serious accident, or other situation deemed exceptional and unavoidable by the HOS.

Cold weather has arrived!  Please be sure to send your students daily with seasonally appropriateouterwear. We will continue to have outdoor courtyard, recess and dismissal whenever possible.
