Parashat Vayikra - Shabbat HaChodesh
Candle Lighting 7:13 p.m.
Havdalah 8:21 p.m.
On Tuesday, March 13th, with the help of Bnot Sherut Shira and Osi, RMBA students participated in the 12th annual Good Deeds Day, which has grown into an annual international day of volunteering in which 93 countries participate in local and national activities that benefit their communities and the environment.
Ultimate Parsha
In this week's parsha, Vayikra, we learn that an elevation offering should be offered "voluntarily." Rashi, based upon the Sifra, explains that if an offering of this nature is mandatory, but the person isn't willing, the courts can work with him until he is prepared to bring such an offering "voluntarily." But how does this make sense? How can a person be forced to be willing to do something? The Rambam helps us understand this question by invoking the basic goodness of the Jewish soul, which always wants to do the right thing. With this concept in play, all the courts are really doing is clearing out the obstacles preventing the person from allowing his soul to do the right thing.

All In For RMBA

Thanks to all who attended our 1st Annual Men's Night Poker Tournament at Genesis! Everyone had a great time snacking on delicious foods, competing, and playing for a great cause: our annual scholarship campaign! Thank you to co-chairs Steven Mitzner and Yair Yeudai for helping to coordinate the evening, and to our sponsors Houston Family Nutrition, RIDA Development, and Howard and Beverly Feldman, without whom it would not have been possible. Congratulations to Business Manager Bob Richard for winning 1st place, and to Jason Goldstein and Alex Gonik for placing in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Click here to view more pictures.
New Siddurim

After much use, Kindergarten's paper Siddurim (prayer books) badly needed to be replaced! Their new and improved Siddurim are laminated, with some color pictures--even personalized ones! The children were excited to use their new Siddurim and we hope that our Tefillot will be enhanced by this new Siddur!!
Parenting Education Class

We held our 3rd parenting education class and discussion this week which focused on lessons from the books How to Raise an Adult and Too Much of a Good Thing. Parents walked away with new approaches to try at home for various situations. The class and discussions were moderated by Lower School Guidance Counselor Stacey Laves-Khalifa and Head of School Dr. Paul Oberman. One parent commented "It was really nice and reassuring to know the things we are doing right, and how we can improve on various aspects of home life".
Middle School Fair

Congratulations to all Middle School students on a successful General Studies Fair! 6th grade students displayed projects on language arts, 7th grade students on social sciences, and 8th grade students displayed science experiments. Congratulations to 1st place: Sascha Ayach (Concentration Through Music) and Shir Carasso (The Research Behind the Bouncy Egg), 2nd place: Netanela Carasso (Rusty Metals), 3rd place: Stav Chen (Five Second Rule).
We Love Books

The 5th graders had a very engaging book talk with Mrs. Levitt during which they each shared an in-depth recommendation for a book they recently read and loved. This will lead to a running book recommendation list in the classroom and hopefully help the 5th graders choose great books to read that were recommended by their friends, and foster a love for reading.
Cool, Colorful Morning

EC 15 students enjoyed the beautiful crisp weather by bringing their arts and crafts outdoors! Children had a great time getting to know colors and shapes while exploring various ways to paint with their favorite colors.
Ongoing Professional Development

Mrs. Levitt and Dr. Oberman attended a 2-day Prizmah conference for Jewish educational leaders in Boston this past Sunday and Monday. Kim Marshall shared his recommended approach to teacher supervision. Kim Marshall is an excellent educational thinker who publishes a weekly roundup of important ideas and research in K-12 education. Dr. Erica Brown facilitated an introspective look at our own leadership within a Jewish lens, We identified areas of strength and an improvement plan, and also discussed goal setting and accountability. Rabbi Michael Berger of the Avi Chai foundation discussed the goals and aspirations of Avi Chai, a private foundation committed to the perpetuation of the Jewish people, Judaism, and the centrality of the state of Israel to the Jewish people. Dr. Oberman's group, HOSPEP (head of school professional excellence project, sponsored by Prizmah) separated on Day 2, sharing challenges facing each school and brainstorming solutions using a very particular discussion protocol.
Kosher Supermarket Tours

11th and 12th grade students enjoyed having their class in an unusual location: the supermarket. Students were guided through the supermarket by the HKA (Houston Kashrut Association). They learned about various Halachot (laws) and got to see all the new Pesach (Passover) products out on the market.
