All Church Birthday Celebration THIS Sunday!

It's birthday celebration time again. During Fellowship time, come and find your Birthday Month table. There will again be a decoration supply table for things to decorate your cake as a team. We will all START and STOP at the same time. So please come to the Fellowship Hall quickly to help your Month Team-mates. Then the cakes will be judged on Theme Creativity. Theme does not have to be just your month theme. HAVE FUN!! Then we EAT our birthday cakes. (Anyone who can help donate to the supply table would be appreciated, we have 12 cakes to decorate.) Bring containers if you wish to take home any leftover cake. Email  elbert.lynne@gmail.com.
Handbell Choir First Rehearsal THIS Sunday

The Bethel Handbell choir will be convening for a special Christmas project. We need many hands to come ring bells and a full-year commitment is not required to join in on this Christmas themed project. If you've been a handbell ringer before or are new to it, please join us for the first rehearsal THIS Sunday, October 16. We are trying a new rehearsal time: after Fellowship time from 11:45a-12:30p. I hope to see you there!
Yes, Ballot Measures Do Matter

The discussion at the 9 a.m. Sunday Adult Class meeting in the Narthex Conference Room THIS Sunday will be about Measure 96: Devotes 1.5 percent of state lottery net proceeds toward veterans' services; Measure 98: Requires state funding for dropout-prevention and career and college readiness programs in Oregon high schools; and Measure 99: Creates 'Outdoor School Education Funds,' continuously funded through the Lottery, to provide outdoor school programs statewide. Pick up a copy of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon Voters' Guide to Oregon Ballot Measures available in the Narthex.

The 4th Sunday Social Justice Forum on Sunday, October 23 at 11:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall will focus on the social justice and ethical issues contained in this year's ballot measures. Britt Conroy, Public Policy Director for the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO), will be with us to answer questions about the EMO recommendations and to talk about how EMO makes recommendations based on their Statement of Social Principles. Although there are seven state-wide ballot measures, the most controversial (and probably the most discussed) will be Measure 97. Bring your questions and opinions as well as your copy of EMO's Voters' Guide to the meeting. Light refreshments will be available.
New Member Classes

The next New Member Classes will be on two Sundays, Oct 30 and Nov 6. New members will be received on Sunday, Nov 13. If you are interested in becoming a member of Bethel, please email the office.
Say Hello To Marshall

Marshall is our Home Perk employee for the month of October. Be sure to stop by the coffee table this Sunday and say hello.
PFLAG Portland Washington County

Join us at Bethel on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 PM for a program by SAGE on the experience of older LGBTQ people, and how their organization is working to meet the need of this growing segment of the population. From their website:

"Founded in 2001 and formerly known as Elder Resource Alliance (ERA), and then Gay & Grey, SAGE Metro Portland works to enhance the lives of older gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community members through education, advocacy, outreach and resource development. In 2010, Friendly House's Gay & Grey program adopted SHARE (Senior Housing and Retirement Enterprises), a private non-profit that had been established in 2001 to address the critical lack of affordable housing for sexual-minority seniors in the Greater Portland Metro area."

"SAGE Metro Portland works with and for LGBT elders 60+ to create community and social change. We work to ensure the safety and well-being of LGBT elders in Portland Metro area. We conduct trainings to educate health care workers, retirement home staff, and many others about the unique issues facing LGBT elders, advocate for inclusive and open housing, and build community through social events and common purpose." Support group/sharing circle to follow after a short break
Bethel Bookies

The Bethel Bookies Group will read "The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu: And Their Race to Save the World's Most Precious Manuscripts" by Joshua Hammer for their October 25 meeting.    The Amazon review says in part:  "In the 1980s, a young adventurer and collector for a government library,  Abdel Kader Haidara travels across the Saharan Dessert to save precious centuries-old Arabic texts from Al Qaeda.  A band of librarians in Timbuktu pulls off a brazen heist worthy of Ocean's Eleven. All are welcome to join us at 10AM in the Narthex Room.
Habitat For Humanity

The next Habitat for Humanity Work Day is scheduled for October 29 from 8:15 to noon. Hop on your broom and sign up with Steve Thomas beginning October 9 after church.
Family Promise Beaverton

Most of us have not experienced hunger or homelessness, but 1,380 children and their families in the Beaverton school district are without a stable place to sleep and worry about their next meal. Together as congregations we can change this! We can transform the lives of our children and their families, returning their self esteem, stabilizing their environment, and transforming their lives to achieve their highest potential.

October 16-22 is National Family Promise week. You have an opportunity to learn more about Family Promise of Beaverton, a new non-profit, at a "Meet and Greet" on Monday Oct. 17 from 6-8 PM at the Beaverton Activities Center, at the corner of Hall Blvd and Allen Blvd. The Beaverton City Council will proclaim this as Family Promise week at their Council meeting on Tues. Oct. 18. Please join in and learn more about how your talents can help in transforming the lives of local children.

Broken Promises
Written by Olga Sanchez
Directed by Francisco Garcia
Produced by Teatro Milagro

Broken Promises is a play that reveals the shocking truth of how quickly and easily teens are ensnared in the world of sex trafficking. It is based on the true life stories of girls from underserved communities who are lured into prostitution.

Desperate for money, four teens living on the edge gamble their lives on internet porn and prostitution. Before she knows it, Adriana is trapped in a life from which she cannot escape, or can she? Broken Promises is set amidst the backdrop of urban Latin hip hop music, rhyme, and choreography.

Thursday, October 20,  7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center, Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon
