On April 11, the
American Planning Association (APA)
announced exemplary comprehensive plans with integrated sustainability elements. The Planning Commission received
recognition from
APA's Comprehensive Plan Standards for Sustaining Places Recognition Program Pilot for two Florida area comprehensive plans.
Imagine 2040: Temple Terrace Comprehensive Plan earned gold level recognition and
Imagine 2040: Plant City Comprehensive Plan received silver level recognition. In 2016, the Planning Commission also received silver recognition for
Imagine 2040: Tampa Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Commission is the only recipient to have multiple plans recognized through the pilot program. "The Planning Commission and our entire Plan Hillsborough staff is so proud to have achieved the only Gold Level Comprehensive Plan for Sustaining Places nationwide," said Melissa Zornitta, Executive Director of the Planning Commission. "After working together with our citizens and partners in planning for more than two years, we are thrilled to have the comprehensive plans of all three cities recognized as guides toward a more sustainable, enduring, and equitable future."

Welcome new Planning Commissioners!
|
At the Planning Commission's April 10 meeting, two new Planning Commissioners recently appointed by the City of Tampa took their oath of office. "We are excited to have Karen Kress and Michael Maurino serve on the Planning Commission," said Executive Director Melissa Zornitta. "Each brings a wealth of experience and insights that will serve the City of Tampa and the entire county well."
Karen Kress currently serves as the Director of Transportation and Planning at the Tampa Downtown Partnership and leads the Partnership's Transportation and Urban Design Committees and its Parking Task Force. A certified planner, Ms. Kress was honored by the Suncoast Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association as Planner of the Year in 2014.
Michael Maurino advocates for policies that benefit children and families in his current role as Director of Public Policy for United Way Suncoast. A graduate of the University of Florida with a B.A. in Political Science and a B.S. in Telecommunications-News, Mr. Maurino has previous experience as a legislative aide and as an advocate for Tampa's business community and for infrastructure to support our growing community.

Jay Collins named Suncoast Planner of the Year!
|
Plan Hillsborough Senior Planner Jay Collins, AICP, was recently awarded Planner of the Year by the Sun Coast Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA). Jay was selected for his tremendous commitment to planning in the region beyond his role at the Planning Commission, taking on a year-long challenge as Conference Host Committee Co-Chair for the 2016 APA Florida Conference in Tampa. Thanks in large part to Jay's hard work, the Conference was an overwhelming success, setting a record for the highest sponsorship and revenue ever received, as well as the second highest number of attendees ever. Congratulations Jay!

Giving back at UACDC's Paint the Town event

Who says planners don't like getting their hands dirty? On
April 21, many Plan Hillsborough staff rolled up their sleeves at Harvest Hope Park and Community Garden to pick up trash, build and paint planter boxes, plant vegetables in the garden, and more. "We celebrated Earth Day and participated in the Hillsborough Soil and Water Conservation District's
Hillsborough 100 Challenge to have 100 organizations do community projects," said Executive Director Melissa Zornitta. "It was rewarding to give back and see some tangible results immediately. So proud of our team!"

Plan Hillsborough planners walk the walk & more!
|
Plan Hillsborough, staff to the Planning Commission, Hillsborough MPO, and Hillsborough River Interlocal Planning Board, celebrated their first-ever Commuter Challenge Week on March 27th - March 31st. Taking the challenge to use alternatives to driving alone to commute to work, travel to off site meetings, or go to lunch, our staff got into the friendly competition with the majority participating. Many went the extra mile by riding the  bus, streetcar, walking, biking, and taking the Downtowner. An eye opening experience, many of our planners now can say they literally have walked the walk... as explained by Tony LaColla of our staff in his Day 1 Commuter Challenge video.
A special shout out to
Tindale Oliver for inspiring our challenge and graciously sharing their tips and tracking spreadsheets. Not only did we experience incredible results, but also our Commuter Challenge Week was featured on a BayNews9 'Getting There' segment with Chuck Henson.
