Exciting Times at CAIR-MN

CAIR-MN has come a long way. In 2007, we resolved 5 cases. Last year, our two civil rights attorneys handled 200 cases, including employment discrimination, school bullying and harassment, land use opposition, hate crimes and vandalism, racial and religious profiling, and extra-judicial exile.

Our work has not gone unnoticed. CAIR-MN was named a 2010 "Difference Maker" by the St. Cloud Times, received the 2011 Nonprofit Mission and Excellence Anti-Racism Award from the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and MAP for Nonprofits, named the 2012 CAIR Chapter of the Year, selected for Minnesota Philanthropy Partners' 2013 "Nonprofits to Know," and featured in the Rochester Diversity Council "What Works." CAIR-MN received the 2013 Difference Makers Award from the American Bar Association's Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division for "making a difference through pro bono work." Each year, CAIR-MN appears over 115 times in local newsmedia.

I have seen firsthand how CAIR-MN's work directly helps people in our community facing difficult times. At a recent outreach event, a very excited and happy Muslim woman approached the CAIR-MN table. I remembered her case. She had requested a prayer accommodation from her employer and was denied, and then fired from her job when a supervisor caught her secretly praying in the bathroom. She told me that she was very pleased with the settlement CAIR-MN attorneys reached for her and described how the situation at her workplace had improved. Over 100 Muslim employees were now granted their legal right to pray in the workplace, in an on-site carpeted prayer room, with adequate break times. She told me, "We pray for all of you, we pray for CAIR. 100 of us, every day."

It made me realize that despite all the Islamophobic opposition, the FBI harassment, the lack of funding, the large caseload, the uphill battles, CAIR-MN is successful because people pray for its success. Please continue to keep CAIR-MN and its dedicated staff, interns, board, advisers and volunteers in your thoughts and prayers.

Our allies, partners, supporters, friends and donors make this important work possible. As I reflect on this amazing journey, I ask you to please continue to show your support. This is a crucial time for CAIR-MN and we have worked tirelessly for the past seven years to get to this point. If you made a donation in Ramadan, please double it. We need you now more than ever.

My amazing journey as CAIR-MN Executive Director is coming to an end, but I will always be part of the CAIR-MN family as a volunteer, supporter, adviser and donor. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by people who believe in me and have helped me learn, grow and succeed as a leader.

I am eager to see CAIR-MN reach new levels with fresh ideas, energy, and skills. This is an exciting time for CAIR-MN.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Minnesota (CAIR-MN) is the state's only Muslim civil rights and legal advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
