Quick Fact:

A PERFECT 7!?!
In the United States students hope for an "A", or celebrate a 100% on an exam. Here in Chile the goal is "a 7"!  That is the highest grade a student can get (although EXCEPTIONAL students might get a couple of tenths more!).
As schools enter into their final semesters, students are seeing more exams and trying to finish their year strong.  Yes, they finish up at Christmas!

"There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every thing under the sun." (Eccl. 3:1)

As I read that verse recently, I thought, "Boy, is that ever NOT true!" It seems that I never have time for anything. As I look back over our last year in Chile, there are so many things that we wanted to do, but have just not had the time. In more ways than I care to admit, it feels like we are just getting started. And in reality, we are.
Is there time for everything? Definitely not. But there is time to do the things that God wants us to do - for that, there is always time. God sees to it. Sometimes He ruins our plans to make sure that we have time for His plans. And sometimes, when our plans coincide with His, time seems to multiply.
Yet for those who are living life without faith in Christ, time is running out. No time to lose! The urgency of bringing the Good News of Jesus to the lost in Chile is never far from our minds. It's time.
The BIG NEWS!
In last month's e-newsletter, we said that we would have some big news to share this month. Here it is!
We of the Santiago Lutheran mission have had the desire to go beyond our southeastern corner of the city and reach out with the Gospel into a new part of Santiago (a city of about 7 million). October was the month to launch our new mission! In the first week of October, we got the

keys
to a small office space that we are renting for a new church-planting mission in an area called Ciudad Satélite (Satellite City) on the far western side of town. In mid-October, a group of  American volunteers helped us paint and clean and prepare the site. On October 26th, we officially launched the new mission with an evangelistic Bible study called "Towards A New Life"! So far, we have had 4 people from the area who have participated. Praise God!
The Year in Review
It's hard to believe that we have been in Chile for over a year already! Where does the time go? We hope you enjoy our "Year in Review" and are encouraged by what God is doing through our partnership with you in HIS MISSION!

October 2014 The National Children's Gathering of the Confessional Lutheran Church of Chile -  Wow!  Tons of kids...lots of helpers... We thank God that in these 12 months the children's ministry continues to grow and improve under the leadership of Mandy, our Sunday School director and a new church member.
9 people came from St. Louis as volunteers to experience mission work in Chile...A year later the same group (plus a few more) returned and were busy teaching English classes, fixing and painting painting the office of our new mission site, working in our Community Center in Valparaiso, and making lasting friendships with fellow Chilean Lutherans!

November Moved into our apartment ...Hooray! Our shipment from the USA arrived, which included a set of handbells donated from a Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran church in Florida. Liisa has been teaching members how to read music by playing bells. Today, our church has Chile's one and only Handbell Choir!

December
Christmas included many evangelistic opportunities through music. Jim  was even back on his sax playing in several public schools!  Unfortunately, the church member who connected us to a lot of these schools lost his job this year. We pray that God will continue to provide for Armando and his family.

January 2015 Youth Gathering in Argentina - We saw lots of new mountains and countryside as we traveled by van 36 hours to share with about 800 South American Lutheran youth. The event was tiring, but inspirational! However, 2 of the 3 youth from our mission in Santiago are no longer going to church. Pray that God would work through His Spirit to revive and reach more youth for His kingdom.

February - We were in the States briefly for the annual conference of the Association of Lutheran Mission Agencies, of which Jim is the president. Then Jim was off to Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Brazil where he taught a Masters-level class on "Urban Missions" to 20 Brazilian pastors.

March-April - Lent & Easter activities included "Every Family Visits".  We praise God that Fabricio's family has a new baby daughter! We are sad that Mauricio's family moved away. We thank God that Armando and Mandy were confirmed! We pray for the families of Elizabeth and of Daniela that have fallen away from regular worship.
Visas - We got them after about 10 months of work and now it's time to renew them!

May-June   New introductory Bible classes begin - Although not all have started attending church, we thank God for Isabel and her daughter, Andrea who are now studying confirmation. Isabel is on fire for the Lord and is so excited that her husband has now started coming to church!
We finalized the purchase of land for our congregation in Santiago! Now, on to construction...
We traveled to the USA to visit congregations -  Thanks to all who are supporting us in prayer, donations and through Thrivent Choice dollars!

July   English Classes - Liisa began teaching an enthusiastic group of high school students.  However, due to scheduling challenges, the classes were discontinued. Hopefully, God will guide us in planning another round of classes which may lead to mission contacts.

August   The National Lutheran Women's Gathering was hosted in Santiago, with over 80 ladies in attendance, many of them new to the Christian faith! This event, along with the Women's Gathering in Argentina with 4 women from our mission was educational, inspirational and motivational.
Liisa with some of the ladies
Before this, there wasn't a functioning women's group at our church.  But now, the ladies of Santiago are gathering monthly to grow together in faith, fellowship and service!

September  Jim TRAVELS....sometimes a lot!  He attended a mission forum in Uruguay...GLO may be sending missionaries there soon.  He hosted a GLO board meeting back at our old homestead in Miramar, Florida.  He stopped in Paraguay to coach a GLO missionary in Asuncion.
