What is Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy at Dermatology Northwest Wilsonville and Salem, OR
Sclerotherapy at Dermatology Northwest Wilsonville and Salem/Keizer
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution (generally a salt solution) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to swell and stick together, and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view. Sclerotherapy is a proven procedure and has been in use since the 1930s.

Micro Needling Update - 4 Months

I have been updating you on my own experiences with Micro Needling.  At this point it has been four months since I started and I have had three treatments.  Four months is when you should start to see some tightening -  and I really do!  I think my neck looks better, my creases are more shallow and overall just better. Today, one of my patients, who hasn't been in in 5 months and didn't know anything about the needling, commented on my skin so I told her about it and she really thought she could tell.
Bottom line is:  I still think it is a good value, l day of down time and everyone I am doing the procedure on is seeing improvement.
I f you are interested  - it is $150 / treatment for a package of 3. If you decide to try it let us know so you can pick up the topical anesthetic and put it on 1 hour before the treatment.

Skin Fitness

Blog by Julie Miller RN

I was reading an article this weekend on the effects of exercise on the brain.  I am getting to the age that I am freaked out about what can happen with the aging brain.  I was happy to read that the brain continues to make new neurons and fine tune neural connections as long as we live. Exercise can slash your risk of Alzheimer's in half and your risk of general dementia by 60%.

We all know that exercise is good for the heart, lungs, bone building and pretty much every organ system so what does it do for the skin?

5 Ways Working Out Benefits Your Skin

1. Exercise makes you sweat. Sweat purges your body of toxins that can clog pores and plague your skin with blemishes. Exercise increases blood flow to the skin, increases neuronal stimulation, and allows the sweat glands to increase their functions and rid the toxins.

2. Exercise tones your muscles. The stronger and firmer your muscles are, the more support your skin will have, and the more firm and elastic it will appear. Toning your muscles may also help to minimize the appearance of cellulite. You can't exercise cellulite away, but you can help it look better.

3. Exercise boosts oxygen and blood flow to the skin. Studies have shown that regular exercise boosts blood flow enough in type 2 diabetics to help reduce the risk of skin problems that lead to amputation. Exercise gets the blood flowing, and that increased blood flow carries more oxygen to the skin. The boost in blood flow and oxygen to the skin cells also carries nutrients that improve skin health.   Blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells.

4. Exercise eases stress. Exercise has long been known as a great way to relieve stress. Those mind-body benefits may extend to your complexion. Though studies are small, some show that stress may worsen, if not actually trigger, acne. Stress may also trigger flare-ups in many dermatologic conditions. It's known to boost hormone production and suppress the body's ability to heal, but regular workouts can keep stress under control.

5. Exercise gives your complexion a beautiful, natural glow. When you exercise, your skin begins to produce more of its natural oils that help skin look supple and healthy.  All of this helps with your skin care efforts.

I just want you to know that I got a rowing machine on Craigs list and I have been trying hard to use it regularly for more brain power but if you see my skin glowing, you will know why. Ha!
